Texans Get Bad News Amid Latest Developments With C.J. Stroud

After sitting out Week 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars due to a concussion suffered in Week 9 against the Denver Broncos, quarterback C.J. Stroud appears no closer to returning for the Houston Texans in Week 11 against the Tennessee Titans.

Stroud did not practice all week leading into the Jaguars game before the Texans ultimately ruled him out. Unfortunately for the Texans, Stroud is off to another ominous start this week.

Moreover, his status for Week 11 could already be settled.

Stroud suffered a concussion when his head hit the turf while Broncos cornerback Kris Abrams-Draine tackled him. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans spoke candidly about not expecting Stroud back for Week 10 early during the week of preparation.

According to KPRC 2’s Aarion Wilson, Stroud will have to wait at least one more week.

“Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is still dealing with symptoms and remains under the NFL concussion protocol, preventing him from returning to practice,” Wilson wrote on November 12.

“Stroud’s status under the protocol is expected to sideline him for a second game in a row Sunday against the Tennessee Titans with backup Davis Mills prepping to start again, per league sources.”

Stroud has experienced light sensitivity and headaches, per Wilson.

Stroud has thrown for 1,702 yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions this season, completing 66.5% of his passes.

The situation is following a similar one from Stroud’s rookie season. Stroud missed games against the Titans and the Cleveland Browns during the 2023 campaign, with the Texans winning the first matchup but dropping the second.

Davis Mills Delivers in Place of C.J. Stroud

Stroud assumed the Texans’ QB1 role as the No. 2 overall pick from Mills, a third-round selection in 2021, in 2023. Since then, Mills has bided his time. He has worked to perfect his craft. It is a task made more challenging by his lack of practice reps throughout a typical week.

“Obviously, I’m ready. That’s kind of how I prepare week in week out. I’ve always had the mindset that you could play at any given snap. Unfortunately, what happened to C.J. in the game, I got thrown in there. But that’s what I I get paid to do. Always be prepared, and it’s nice having a full week of practice going into this game to attack this defense, and go out there and lead the guys,” Mills told reporters on November 5.

“The backup quarterback’s not getting most the reps throughout the week. So, it’s nice having a game plan built around you, and being able to rep all those plays throughout the week to see the different defensive looks from the uh the uh look team and go out there and execute the plays early in the week so you can kind of make it work on Sunday.”

Mills completed 60% of his passes for 292 yards, 2 TDs, and 1 INT against the Jaguars. He also brought his record against the Texans’ AFC South rivals to 3-1 all-time.

Now, he likely gets to face the 2-7 Titans in Stroud’s place for the Texans in Week 11.
