Texans Get Good News Before Rematch Against Jaguars in Week 10

The Houston Texans are already set to be without quarterback C.J. Stroud in Week 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars. However, the Texans did get encouraging news on the injury front regarding running back Nick Chubb and defensive end Will Anderson.

Chubb, a four-time Pro Bowler with the Cleveland Browns, is in his first season with the Texans and starting in place of the injured Joe Mixon. Anderson was the No. 3 pick in 2023.

Naturally, their absences from practice to start the week drew attention.

Nick Chubb, Will Anderson Return to Practice for Texans

According to KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson, Anderson and Chubb both returned to practice for the Texans on Thursday.

The Texans listed Anderson as a nonparticipant with a quad issue on the first injury report of Week 10. It included a laundry list of his teammates. Anderson was a Pro Bowler as a rookie in 2023. However, he has missed at least two games in each of his first two seasons.

He has yet to miss a contest in 2025.

Chubb was a DNP in Wednesday’s practice due to a foot issue. That is ominous since a foot injury ended his comeback attempt early with the Browns in 2024.

Fortunately for the Texans, they have found something with rookie fourth-round pick Woody Marks, complementing Chubb with Mixon sidelined. Still, with Stroud down for at least this week and 2021 third-round pick Davis Mills starting in his place, the Texans need all hands on deck.

Per Wilson, reserve defensive lineman Denico Autry (knee) was also present on Thursday.

Texans Navigating Extensive Injury List

Despite the encouraging news with Anderson, Autry, and Chubb, Stroud is but one injury hurdle the Texans must overcome against a 5-3 Jaguars team that beat them, with Stroud under center, in Week 3.

The Texans were also without kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn, though that was expected with the team signing Matthew Wright in free agency after the trade deadline.

However, they were also missing offensive linemen Tytus Howard and Ed Ingram.

Howard, like Stroud and safety Jalen Pitre, who also missed his second straight practice, is dealing with a concussion. Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans noted the rarity of a player suffering a concussion in-game and being healthy enough to play the following week.

Ingram has a knee injury, meaning Mills could be without two of his starting offensive linemen in a maligned group. The full report will tell the extent of the Texans’ woes.

At 3-5, the Texans are on the verge of must-win territory in Week 10.

Davis Mills Makes Strong Claim Before Week 10 Start

GettyDavis Mills #10 of the Houston Texans runs with the ball against the Carolina Panthers.

That previous meeting was in Jacksonville, while this one will be at home in NRG Stadium, and Mills has a winning record against the Jaguars. The veteran passer spoke candidly about his preparation heading into this potentially pivotal contest.

“Obviously, I’m ready,” Mills told reporters on November 5. “That’s kind of how I prepare week in week out. I’ve always had the mindset that you could play at any given snap. Unfortunately, what happened to C.J. in the game, I got thrown in there. But that’s what I I get paid to do. Always be prepared. And it’s nice having a full week of practice going into this game to attack this defense and go out there and lead the guys.

Mills plans to lean on his familiarity with Pro Bowl wide receiver Nico Collins. He also said that he will be sure to play on time and spread the ball around, too.

The Texans will need the best version of Mills to take down the Jaguars.
