Texans Player Facing Costly Punishment From NFL After Colts Game

The Houston Texans are 7-5 and surging back into the AFC South race after defeating the Indianapolis Colts in Week 13, but defensive tackle Tim Settle Jr. can expect to hear from the league as he and the team prepare for their next matchup.

Settle and the Texans are on the road against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 14.

However, one decision Settle made against the Colts is almost certain to leave him lighter in the pocket.

Tim Settle Facing Costly Punishment After Texans Game

During the fourth quarter of the Texans’ win over the Colts, with his team leading 20-13, Settle received a roughing the passer penalty for his hit on Indy quarterback Daniel Jones. He received the requisite 15-yard penalty. The Colts ultimately kicked a field goal on the drive.

However, roughing the passer falls under “Player Safety Rules and/or Flagrant Personal Foul” guidelines.

It is punishable by fines of $17,389 for first offenses and $23,186 for second offenses.

This would be Settle’s first fine of the season. He is in his second season with the Texans. A former fifth-round selection of the Washington Commanders, Settle was the No. 163 overall pick of the 2023 draft. Settle has also played for the Buffalo Bills.

He has 15 total tackles, 3 pass deflections, and 1.0 sacks while starting all 12 of the Texans’ games so far this season.

For his career, Settle has 133 total stops, 15.0 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries, and 1 forced fumble.

Hall of Fame HC Crushes NFL Officiating Over Texans Game

Notably, Settle’s infraction was arguably the least controversial of the Texans’ contest. Hall of Famer and former Colts head coach Tony Dungy, who also held the same role with one of the Texans’ opponents from earlier in the season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, did not hold back.

Dungy took aim at what he felt were favorable calls for the Texans.

The first was a pass interference call against Colts cornerback Kenny Moore II in the fourth quarter on a drive that led to the Texans scoring the go-ahead touchdown to make it 20-13.

“We’ve had bad pass interference calls all weekend and some missed PI calls,” Dungy posted on X on November 30. “But the one in the Texans-Colts game was very bad. Blatant disregard of the rule when legs get tangled. And on top of that they missed a delay of game before the ball was snapped. NFL has to do something about this.”

Dungy posted a follow-up, including the Commanders’ Week 13 tilt against the Denver Broncos.

“The NFL continues to use replay to correct some calls but not to correct obvious missed calls. This creates a credibility problem. When replay is used to move the spot of a ball 6 inches or used to see if the QB’s knee touched the ground— but can’t be used to see if he was tripped or can’t be used to see if the clock is at :00 when players are pointing to the clock it creates issues,” Dungy posted.

“We either need to correct ALL OBVIOUS missed calls or we need to let the officials call the games on the field and live with it.”

Refs Made Wrong Call Against Texans

ESPN’s Stephen Holder agreed on the PI call that benefited Settle and the Texans, posting on X, “This pass interference call against Kenny Moore II has to be one of the worst I’ve ever seen. He literally never touched the receiver. Lol”

However, the delay of game and a point-after try by kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn remain polarizing.

Pro Football Focus’ Mike Florio noted there were no questions or answers provided regarding a questionable pass interference call against Texans safety Calen Bullock.

Dungy is right in that the inconsistencies in how games are officiated have led to doubt from fans, with the legalization of sports betting across many states in recent years only fueling questions and speculation.

When all was said and done, Settle and the Texans got the much-needed victory.
