The Houston Texans are in trouble, and they know it. After entering the season as the overwhelming favorite to win the AFC South, the Texans have lost each of their first three games of the season, and while there’s still a lot of football left to play, they already appear to be in serious danger of missing out on the postseason.
In particular, Houston’s offense is a mess, as it cannot get anything going in both the pass and run game. With that in mind, the Texans are continuing to experiment with different players on their roster in hopes that someone can provide some sort of spark. On Wednesday morning, that led to them reuniting with former Detroit Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus.
Texans Re-Sign Quintez Cephus to Practice Squad
In 2023, the Texans were one of the top breakout teams in the league, thanks in large part to the play of rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud. After getting selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Stroud threw for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns, helping lead Houston to the playoffs, where they defeated the Cleveland Browns before getting eliminated by the Baltimore Ravens.
While the Texans made it to the playoffs and advanced to the divisional round again in 2024, they never looked like the team that they were in 2023. However, the front office was busy making upgrades to the roster this offseason, with the hope being it could take a step forward after largely treading water last year.
Instead, the opposite has happened, as Houston has looked even worse than it did last season. That has resulted in the front office to continue tinkering with the roster in an effort to get back on track. That led to the return of Cephus, who briefly spent time with the Texans in August before getting released as part of their final roster cuts.
“The Houston Texans have signed Quintez Cephus to the practice squad,” the Texans announced on their official website.
Texans Desperately Need to Earn a Win in Week 4 vs. Titans

A former fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Cephus initially worked as a secondary receiver on the Lions offense, but he hasn’t played in a game since 2022, despite spending time with the Buffalo Bills, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers, in addition to another stint with the Texans. He has potential, but he can’t be counted on for consistent production. Heck, he’s on the practice squad, so he may not even play in Week 4.
Regardless of who’s on the field for Houston this week, they need a win. They will face their easiest opponent yet in the Tennessee Titans, who have also yet to earn a victory this season. If the Texans want any shot at finding their way back into the playoffs, they are going to need to win this game. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, and while it’s only the fourth game of the season, there’s no doubt this is a must-win game for Houston.
