These Telling Stats Perfectly Sum Up the Seahawks Season So Far

The Seattle Seahawks are off to an incredible start to the 2025 season. After finishing 10-7 in head coach Mike Macdonald’s first season, Seattle traded away star WR D.K. Metcalf and starting QB Geno Smith in a surprising shake-up to a competitive team that nearly made the playoffs.

The Seahawks signed QB Sam Darnold to be their new starter, a former first-round pick of the Jets who was coming off a breakout season with the Vikings. And so far, the results have exemplary. The Seahawks are 7-2 and tied with the Rams for first place in the NFC West, and they’re on track to make the playoffs for the first time since 2022.

It’s not just a fluke, either. The advanced stats back this up. Per PFF, the Seahawks are the only team in the NFL to rank in the top five in yards per play on offense and yards per play allowed on defense. It goes to show the level of complementary football the Seahawks play, with a stifling defense and explosive offense.

Seattle Seahawks WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba is on Pace for Almost 2,000 Receiving Yards

As good as Darnold has been so far this season, the unquestioned hero of Seattle’s offense is third-year WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba. A former first-round pick out of Ohio State, Smith-Njigba played second fiddle to Metcalf in this offense for two years. But with Metcalf now it Pittsburgh, the path was cleared for Smith-Njigba to take over this offense, and he’s delivering one of the best seasons we’ve ever seen from a wide receiver.

Right now, Smith-Njigba has 63 receptions for 1,041 yards and five touchdowns. That puts him on pace for just under 2,000 receiving yards on the season — but with eight games to go, many of them big ones, that mark is certainly within reach.

It goes beyond just counting stats with Smith-Njigba, who’s proving himself to be one of the best wide receivers in the league. He’s the second-highest graded receiver in PFF’s system at a 93.3, just a tenth of a point behind Rams WR Puka Nacua. If you just look at receiving grade, it’s actually Smith-Njigba who leads Nacua by a tenth of a point for tops in the NFL.

Pivotal Game Against the Rams Upcoming for the Seattle Seahawks

On Sunday, the Rams host the Seahawks in a battle for the NFC’s best team just over halfway through the season. The winner will take a game lead in the NFC West with seven to go, but the other head-to-head matchup will still be yet to come. No matter who wins, the race for that division will be far from over.

Still, the importance of this game is difficult to overstate. The NFC playoff race is an absolute gauntlet, with other teams such as the Eagles, Packers, Lions, and Buccaneers also in the mix for the conference’s No. 1 seed. The Seahawks could really use a road win to stake their early claim on that spot themselves.
