Thunder Waive Son of Legendary Coach

The Oklahoma City Thunder have waived guard Buddy Boeheim, the team announced. Boeheim, the son of Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, joined the Thunder on October 14 on an Exhibit 10 contract after spending last season with Oklahoma City’s G League affiliate, the Blue.

Soon after waiving Boeheim, Oklahoma City filled the vacant camp spot by signing Erik Reynolds II, a 6-foot-2 guard who played four seasons at Saint Joseph’s University. Reynolds went undrafted in the 2025 NBA Draft despite averaging 16.0 points, 2.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists as a senior, finishing among the Atlantic 10’s top scorers.

Reynolds and Boeheim were both part of the Thunder’s 2025 Summer League roster, and their transactions reflect a broader preseason trend for Oklahoma City. In recent weeks, the team has cycled through several players from its Las Vegas squad—signing and quickly waiving them—to secure their G League rights for the upcoming season.

That constant churn at the bottom of the roster has become standard practice for the Thunder under general manager Sam Presti, who often uses training camp and preseason to build depth for the Blue. Players signed to Exhibit 10 contracts receive training camp experience and a small bonus if they report to the Blue for at least 60 days. While only one or two players from that group might earn the team’s final two-way slot, most are expected to land with the Blue once waivers clear.

What It Means for Buddy Boeheim

Boeheim’s release marks another setback in his effort to secure a long-term NBA roster spot. The former Syracuse standout went undrafted in 2022 before signing a two-way contract with the Detroit Pistons. He appeared in 10 NBA games that season but spent most of his time in the G League, where he averaged 12.1 points per game on 37% shooting from three.

The Thunder’s Exhibit 10 deal allowed Oklahoma City to potentially assign him to the Oklahoma City Blue if he cleared waivers, with an additional incentive bonus tied to G League service time. The franchise has long used the Blue as a development hub for young shooters and role players, and Boeheim could still remain in that pipeline if retained on a G League contract.

Boeheim’s father, Jim Boeheim, retired in 2023 after 47 seasons at Syracuse, where he won 1,015 games and the 2003 NCAA championship, coaching Carmelo Anthony in his lone college season. Buddy played four years for his father, finishing his college career as one of the ACC’s most prolific three-point shooters.

What’s Next for the Thunder

The Thunder continue to fine-tune their roster ahead of the 2025–26 season, which officially tips off next week. The organization currently carries more than the 15-man limit, meaning additional moves are expected before opening night. Oklahoma City’s developmental strategy relies heavily on the Blue, and several Exhibit 10 players from camp are likely to join the G League roster once final cuts are made.

Oklahoma City wraps up its preseason schedule on October 17, before opening the regular season on October 21 against the Houston Rockets.
