Tigers-Marlins Trade Pitch Completes Detroit’s Rotation

After a strong finish to the 2024 season, the Detroit Tigers ended up making the playoffs when everybody thought they had no chance at this time a year ago. A year later, they hold the best record in all of Major League Baseball and now have expectations to make a deep postseason run.

However, like every contending team in baseball, the Tigers could certainly make additions to their roster as the July 31st trade deadline is rapidly approaching. Detroit is backed by All-Stars Riley Greene, Gleyber Torres, Zack McKinstry, and more, but the real star of their team is AL Cy Young frontrunner Tarik Skubal, who is looking to win the illustrious Cy Young award for a second consecutive season. Behind Skubal in the starting rotation are Casey Mize and Jack Flaherty.

Mize was named to the All-Star roster and has been a solid No.2 option, but Flaherty has been inconsistent all season with an ERA north of 4.50. The Tigers are almost surely going to win the AL Central with a comfortable 11.5 game lead, and are now thinking towards October.

Detroit Trade Idea Lands Edward Cabrera from Miami

The Miami Marlins have performed a lot better than most would have thought and have been a tough, pesky squad to deal with on the road. But it’s safe to assume that, since they aren’t contending for a Wild Card spot, they could be sellers at the deadline. They have two starting pitchers who will receive numerous calls from contending teams. Edward Cabrera happens to be one of them, and he is a great fit for a Detroit Tigers squad that could use another depth starter for a potential best-of-seven playoff series.

Cabrera is an arm that Detroit can afford, and he’s quietly having the best season of his young career. He has a 3.61 ERA in 82.1 innings, also punching out 86 batters, and a BB/9 mark around three. For a guy who has struggled with his command in prior years, his walk numbers have come down tremendously, which makes him a formidable arm in any rotation.

Detroit Has Capital to Give Up

For the Detroit Tigers, the time is now, and the front office understands that. They don’t want to take a chance on running out a starter that can’t get the job done in October, and blow the chance of having Skubal carry them to an AL Pennant. A deal like this would likely cost Detroit a position player, maybe a guy like Trey Sweeney or Parker Meadows, and a higher-tier prospect in their loaded farm system. A name that comes to mind is Thayron Liranzo, a catcher prospect who is expected to be MLB-ready next season. The Miami Marlins may also ask for a pitcher of some sort to replace Cabrera.

As the deadline gets closer and closer, Detroit is expected to be a buyer, and look out for them to make a big splash in the coming weeks.

A trade for Cabrera would certainly complete the Tigers’ rotation, and actually may give them one of the best starting rotations in baseball.
