Titans Offense Receives the Most Question Marks Ahead of No. 1 Pick’s NFL Debut

One of the few benefits of winning just three games last season is the fact that the Tennessee Titans selected Cam Ward in the draft. The 2025 No. 1 overall pick brings new life to a Titans offense that struggled under Will Levis.

With Levis out for the season, it’ll be the Cam Ward show in Tennessee. The Titan’s newest quarterback will make his NFL debut in mere hours against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Raymond James Stadium will go down as the NFL stadium where Ward makes his debut. The Miami graduate balled out last season and earned a starting job in Tennessee. Even if Levis was healthy, there was not much of a competition.

Jim Wyatt has been covering the Titans since 1999. He’s been through six head coaches and an eight-season playoff drought. Currently, the team is in a three-year drought after making the playoffs in four of five seasons from 2017-21.

CBS Sports recently covered their collapse, a shocking one at that. The former AFC No. 1 seed quickly fell to receiving the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Now, Wyatt has his eyes locked in on the 23-year-old.

“The Titans want to see Ward make good decisions, with continued improvement. So, how much will Ward play?” Wyatt asked. “Probably not much, a series or two, depending on how long possessions go.”

With Ward being the focal point of the offense, Wyatt knows he’s going to need time to develop. While he needs time to adjust to the NFL, he might not have that with the current state of Tennessee’s offensive line.

“The Titans won’t put Ward out there without being able to protect him with the best they’ve got up front,” Wyatt said. “So, the first-team offensive line will play as long as Ward is out there.”

It’s a new look O-Line for the Titans with Dan Moore at left tackle and JC Latham moving to the right. Recently, Jelly Roll praised Latham’s offseason progression.

One thing that should help Ward get comfortable is the veteran presence at wide receiver. Calvin Ridley, Van Jefferson, and Tyler Lockett were all praised by Wyatt. While they may not all be what they once were, they remain valuable assets on the team.

“I was really impressed with what I saw from Elic Ayomanor and Chimere Dike in Thursday’s joint practice, when Xavier Restrepo also had a good day,” Wyatt said. “All these guys and more will get chances in the preseason opener.”

He spoke about the tight ends, “There’s a reason why coaches put rookie tight end Gunnar Helm No.2 on the depth chart.” He had high praise for Helm who showed out in Thursday’s practice.

“Expect tight ends David Martin-Robinson, Josh Whyle, Thomas Odukoya and Drake Dabney to get a lot of work, too,” Wyat added. With plenty of names still trying to earn their spot on the team, Brandon Allen and Tim Boyle have their work cut out for them to spread out the ball as much as possible.
