Tony Romo Compares Josh Allen to Legendary NFL QB After Win Over Chiefs

The Buffalo Bills had another exciting game on Sunday, taking down the Kansas City Chiefs 28-21.

Quarterback Josh Allen once again showcased his superhero abilities, compiling 273 passing yards and tossing one touchdown. In addition, he scrambled for 19 yards and crossed the goal line twice on the ground.

Tony Romo Compares Allen to John Elway

Former NFL quarterback and current CBS analyst Tony Romo, who provided commentary alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nance for Sunday’s game, compared Allen to an NFL legend.

“This week, Allen reminded me of John Elway, Romo said on Sunday, via NFL on CBS. “He’s rare, as he’s physically gifted and possesses numerous assets. Still, he just hasn’t won the big one. You know, Josh hasn’t gotten there, but it’s like they are very similar, and all of a sudden. As I was watching the tape this week, I noticed that they’re running these toss plays and employing more zone schemes, resembling the Shanahan system. This is a new approach, as they weren’t utilizing those strategies in the past.”

Elway served as the quarterback for the Denver Broncos from 1983 to 1998, establishing himself as one of the most skilled quarterbacks of his era. However, during the early part of his career, he did not achieve significant success in the Super Bowl.

Elway reached the Super Bowl early in his career, unlike Allen, who has yet to make it to the big game. Elway fell short in his first three appearances, which were in 1987, 1988 and 1990.

The Hall of Fame quarterback didn’t break through and win his first Super Bowl until he was 37 years old in 1998, when he beat the Green Bay Packers.

Elway faced a long journey before finally claiming his first Super Bowl ring, and with Allen still under 30, he has plenty of time ahead in his NFL career. Therefore, there’s no need to worry that he hasn’t yet reached the Super Bowl or secured a championship trophy.

Elway Could’ve Drafted Allen

Elway had an opportunity to bring Allen on board back in 2018. At that time, Elway was serving as the Broncos’ general manager, and Denver held the fifth pick in the NFL Draft that year, just as Allen was entering the league.

Instead of the Broncos taking Allen, they drafted North Carolina State pass rusher Bradley Chubb, and Allen was selected by the Bills two picks later.

In July 2024, Elway made an appearance on the “Pardon My Take” podcast by Barstool Sports, where he shared his experience of being paired with Allen in a celebrity golf tournament.

“I played with him and I’m going, ‘I wonder how long it’s going to take him to realize I passed on him and took Bradley Chubb instead,” Elway said on the podcast, via The Athletic’s Nick Kosmider. “And it took him two-and-a-half holes to bring it up.”

Elway then called passing up Allen the biggest mistake of his career.

“I loved him, but it just didn’t work out,” Elway said of Allen. “He was my type (of quarterback). That was probably my biggest mistake of my GM days, not taking Josh.”

Hopefully, Allen will one day join Elway as a quarterback who led his team to a Super Bowl victory. But let’s hope it doesn’t happen nearly at the end of Allen’s career like it did for Elway.
