Jalen Hurts helped bring a Lombardi Trophy to Philadelphia less than a year ago, but that doesn’t mean the Eagles won’t be looking to add more quarterbacks to their QB room after this season.
Hurts, 27, is currently piloting an offense that’s sputtering worse than a 40-year-old lawnmower. Through 13 games, he has over 2,700 yards passing, 19 touchdowns and six interceptions, which isn’t bad at all. He also remains dangerous on the ground, running for over 330 yards and eight TDs. But with Philadelphia’s offense averaging just over 16 points per game over its last five matchups, things are rough and getting rougher in Philly.
The ugliest moment came in Los Angeles Week 14, when Hurts committed five turnovers (four interceptions and a fumble) in a 22-19 overtime loss to the Chargers.
According to ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, the Eagles may be about to do to Hurts what they did to former QB Carson Wentz.
ESPN: Belief Around the NFL Is Eagles Could Draft QB in 2026 Who Could Ultimately Replace Jalen Hurts
“Some people around the league were starting to think the Eagles might draft a quarterback high in 2026 even before Jalen Hurts’ four-interception performance,” Fowler wrote on December 10. “The prediction from those folks: GM Howie Roseman snags a passer on Day 2, allowing Hurts to serve as the starter in 2026 while having a future starter to develop. ‘[The Eagles] will do to Jalen what they did to Carson Wentz,’ one industry source predicted.”
Since taking over as Philly’s full-time starter, Hurts has amassed a 54–25 regular season record, won two NFC titles and brought home a Super Bowl when he out-dueled Patrick Mahomes and earned Super Bowl 59 MVP in a 40–22 demolition of the Chiefs.
But according to Fowler, what happened in 2024 may not matter as much his entire body of work.
“The Eagles know that their passing game struggles largely because Hurts has limitations,” Fowler added. “The reality is the 2024 season was an aberration because Saquon Barkley and a dominant O-line were breaking off big gains weekly, opening up play-action and downfield shots for the passing game. This isn’t the same offensive line, which means the Barkley gains aren’t as frequent. That places the spotlight on Hurts, for better or worse. … Hurts is still a question mark in Year 6.”
More on What it Could Mean for Hurts
GettyThe Philadelphia Eagles could draft a QB in 2026 who could ultimately replace Jalen Hurts.
So what would drafting a QB on Day 2 actually mean for Hurts?
Well, it would certainly apply a little pressure. A second- or third-round QB would give the front office an exit strategy if Hurts sputters or gets injured. It also guarantees that every off-target throw in 2026 would come with a camera cutaway to The New Kid on the Sideline holding a tablet and waiting for an opportunity.
To be fair, adding a young QB might even help Hurts, who has built his entire athletic identity on discomfort (losing his job at Alabama, transferring to OU, fighting his way into his starting job with the Eagles, elevating beyond what scouts thought he could be, etc.). A highly drafted backup would add some friction, and historically, Hurts tends to play better when he’s facing a challenge.
The Eagles won a championship with Hurts, but the NFL is ultimately a business — and few know this better than Eagles GM Howie Roseman. It’ll be fascinating to see what the Eagles do when the draft rolls around in 2026.
