Trade Idea Has Maple Leafs Acquiring $24M Star Winger to Replace Marner

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a clear need for a top-six winger after Mitch Marner left in a sign-and-trade to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Heavy.com proposed a deal that would see the Maple Leafs acquire Tyler Toffoli from the San Jose Sharks in an intriguing deal.

Maple Leafs acquire:

Sharks acquire:

The proposed deal would be an intriguing one as Toronto would acquire a star top-six winger for a top defensive prospect, a young NHL forward, and a mid-round pick.

The Maple Leafs would acquire Toffoli, who’s entering the second year of his four-year, $24 million deal. Toffoli could play on the top line with Matthew Knies and Auston Matthews and replace Mitch Marner. Toffoli can add some much-needed offense to the Maple Leafs’ lineup to replace Marner. He recorded 30 goals and 24 assists for 54 points in 78 games with the Sharks last season. Toffoli is from Toronto, so he would get to play at home. He also won the Stanley Cup in 2014, so he would add some leadership and winning ways to the locker room.

In return, San Jose would acquire Danford, who’s a top defensive prospect and a stay-at-home defenseman. The Sharks need to add a young defenseman as they have plenty of top-ranked forward prospects. Danford likely won’t play in the NHL for another 2-3 years.

The Sharks would also acquire Robertson, who can replace Toffoli. Robertson is an RFA, but he hasn’t been given a major role with the Maple Leafs. In San Jose, he could have a top-six role. Robertson recorded 15 goals and 7 assists for 22 points in 69 games.

Maple Leafs Looking to Upgrade Top-6

Toronto has a clear need to add more offense to help replace the void of Marner.

The Maple Leafs have added more depth to the roster this offseason by adding Mattias Maccelli, Nic Roy, Michael Pezzetta, and Dakota Joshua.

Yet, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving revealed the team is looking to add another top-six winger to replace Marner.

“When a player of Mitch’s magnitude moves away, that’s never a fun day,” Treliving said on July 1… “Mitch was a top-six forward, and we haven’t replaced that hole. That’s really where our focus is.”

The Maple Leafs have just under $3 million in cap space, but could create more by trading Calle Jarnkrok and David Kampf, which would allow them to add a top-six forward.

Toffoli Has No-Trade Clause

Toffoli signed a four-year deal with the Sharks last offseason, and it included a no-trade clause.

However, given that Toffoli is from Toronto and the Maple Leafs are a Cup contender, he may waive it for that. But, at the end of the year, he seemed adamant he would be in San Jose next season.

“My stuff’s not in storage,” Toffoli said at locker cleanout on April 17. “And I can come home to my house whenever I feel like, and not be worried about what house I’m going to be renting next.”

Toffoli has been an important leader for the young Sharks roster and is hopeful to lead them to the playoffs by the end of his contract.
