The Toronto Maple Leafs have been linked to trading away some depth players to clear some cap space.
Heavy.com proposed a deal that would see the Maple Leafs deal Calle Jarnkrok to the Washington Capitals in a one-for-one move.
Maple Leafs acquire:
Capitals acquire:
The proposed deal would be a one-for-one swap as Toronto would take a flyer on a former first-round pick. Washington, meanwhile, would get a more experienced NHL player who makes more money.
The Maple Leafs would acquire Milano, who’s entering the final year of his three-year, $5.7 million deal. Milano was selected 16th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft and is 29. The winger skated in only 3 games last season. But, the year prior, he had 15 goals and 8 assists for 23 points in 49 games with the Capitals. Milano would be a bottom-six forward for the Maple Leafs and could be worth taking a flyer on as he could add some scoring to the bottom of the lineup.
In return, Toronto would deal Jarnkrok, who’s entering the final year of his four-year, $8.4 million deal, as he makes $200k more than Milano. Jarnkrok dealt with injuries last season but was also scratched at times, as Toronto has been looking to move on from him. Jarnkrok recorded 1 goal and 6 assists for 7 points in 19 games. He would be a third-line player for the Capitals.
Insider: Maple Leafs Looking to Trade Jarnkrok
Toronto had been linked to trading Calle Jarnkrok and David Kampf this offseason, as there were even rumors they’d buy them out.
However, the Maple Leafs opted not to buy out either play. But, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Toronto is looking to shop Kampf and Jarnkrok.
“I think one of the reasons Toronto didn’t get Mangiapane, they indicated we need to move some bodies out, and Mangiapane didn’t want to wait, Roslovic is waiting. I assume one of them is Kampf, another could be potentially be Jarnkrok, we’ll leave Nick Robertson out of the rumors,” Friedman said on 32 Thoughts.
Jarnkrok struggled to find a role with the Maple Leafs last season after returning from injury. In the offseason, the Maple Leafs have added Mattias Maccelli and Nic Roy. Toronto has also been linked to Jack Roslovic.
With that, Jarnkrok’s role with the Maple Leafs may be even further diminished, which could lead to the Maple Leafs trading him.
Maple Leafs Could Sign Roslovic
The Maple Leafs have been linked to signing Jack Roslovic in free agency.
Roslovic remains a free agent, and Maple Leafs insider James Mirtle says the ball is in Toronto’s court to get a deal done.
“One player the Leafs have been connected to the past few days is Jack Roslovic. Another offense-focused winger who can play a little center,” Mirtle wrote. “He scored 22 goals for Carolina last year. But also fell out of favor as the season wore on in part due to his defensive lapses and misplays with the puck. Leading to games as a healthy scratch in the playoffs.
“I think this one is roughly 50-50 right now. But it sounds like the ball is in the Leafs’ court here. In that he’s interested in the opportunity,” Mirtle added. “And I don’t think it would cost a lot, in terms of dollars or term.”
Roslovic would likely sign a one-year deal worth around $2.5 million. He recorded 22 goals and 17 assists for 39 points in 81 games last season with the Carolina Hurricanes.
