Trade Pitch Brings Cowboys ‘Elite’ Starting CB From AFC West

There are 2 things that we can almost say with 100 percent certainty are inevitable when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys and their cornerbacks.

The first is that starter and former NFL All-Pro Trevon Diggs will get hurt again. He doesn’t take care of his body and doesn’t rehab properly and has missed 21 games over the last 2 seasons with knee injuries. He’s going to get hurt again.

The second is that former NFL All-Pro Daron Bland will leave in free agency. The Cowboys simply cannot have 2 cornerbacks on the books with salaries over $90 million each, which is what Bland is likely to land in free agency.

The Cowboys might not even be able to afford Bland if he has a terrible season in 2025 and that number drops to an even more reasonable number. Remember this is a team that is probably going to make edge rusher Micah Parsons the highest paid defensive player in NFL history soon.

Unfortunately for the Cowboys, NFL rules still necessitate having 11 players on the field on the defensive side of the ball so they’re going to need someone to line up at cornerback over the next few years.

Preferably someone good.

Making Move For Starting CB From AFC West

Bleacher Report’s Alex Kay thinks one solution could be a trade that swaps a 2026 third round pick in exchange for Denver Broncos starting cornerback Riley Moss, who is under contract for approximately $2.7 million over the next 2 seasons and became a full time starter in 2024.

Moss has become quickly expendable with the addition of 2025 first round pick and Jim Thorpe Award winner Jahdae Barron. Moss is coming off a season in which he started 14 games with 86 tackles, 1 interception and 8 pass deflections.

“The Broncos could clear up roster space and add future assets by dealing Riley Moss —a 2023 third-rounder — to the Cowboys this offseason,” Kay wrote on August 21. “While Moss is a quality corner who emerged as a starter last year, he’s a bit redundant following Denver’s decision to draft Jahdae Barron. The first-rounder looked extremely sharp during his preseason debut and seems to be the long-term No. 2 corner across from Pat Surtain II in this defense.”

Cowboys Drafted CB With Major Red Flag

The Cowboys used a third round pick (No. 76 overall) on East Carolina’s Shavon Revel in the 2025 NFL draft with hopes he’ll eventually become a starter at one of the outside cornerback spots.

There’s one problem — we have no idea when Revel will actually take the field for the Cowboys. Revel was projected as a first round pick headed into the 2024 season but only played 3 games before he tore his ACL.

If Revel is right, he could be the answer down the road. It might be smart to get Moss now and hope he and Revel can be their starting cornerbacks in the future.

“A big opportunity awaits the third-round rookie, who will almost certainly see starting reps when the season begins, as Trevon Diggs is still recovering from a January knee surgery and could start the season on the PUP list,” ESPN’s Ben Solak wrote on July 16. ” … Revel fell in the draft for injury concerns. But before his 2024 season was cut short by an ACL tear, Revel was a dominant small-school corner with 16 pass breakups and three interceptions over 15 games.”
