The Green Bay Packers have never been a team to make splash moves in free agency or trading top tier NFL Draft assets in blockbuster trades on a regular basis.
Yet, one bold trade pitch has the Packers acquiring one the premier pass rushers in the league near the NFL trade deadline in 2025.
Packers Trade Proposal Has Star DE Trey Hendrickson Joining Green Bay
The contract negotiation stalemate between the Cincinnati Bengals and DE Trey Hendrickson has been widely reported for the majority of the offseason, which has Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report bold predicting the Green Bay Packers will acquire the pass rushing savant ahead of the NFL trade deadline in 2025.
Gagnon wrote, “The most realistic scenario involves several NFC pass rush-needy contenders pursuing Hendrickson, as Cincinnati would probably want to avoid dealing him within the conference. It works out well that the Commanders, Packers and Lions are probably the teams that best fit the need profile here.”
Trading for Hendrickson with the Bengals is not likely to come at a discount.
First, the Packers would have to send either some significant draft compensation or a talented young prospect or two in the direction of the Bengals just to acquire Hendrickson.
Then, they would likely have to immediately sign him to a lucrative contract extension in order for him to take the field.
These obstacles certainly complicate the possibility of a deal getting done, if the Bengals prove unwilling to drop their compensation requirements in a potential trade.
Gagnon added, “The Packers have more of a need here than the Lions and more cap room than the Commanders. Ergo, they win these sweepstakes.”
The other teams named as potential trade options for Hendrickson is a bit concerning considering the Packers could lose out on a productive veteran player who could be used against them.
This could create a bidding war of sorts near the trade deadline if it becomes clear that Hendrickson and the Bengals aren’t going to get a deal done.
What Kind of Impact Would Trey Hendrickson Have for the Packers in 2025?
Hendrickson’s sack production over the last two seasons speaks for itself with 35 sacks over his 34 games in Cincinnati. Few players in NFL history have topped 17 sacks in consecutive seasons, which makes Hendrickson’s skillset one of the most valuable in the league.
This makes Hendrickson’s contract stalemate that much more confusing for a Bengals organization who clearly believes they are in the Super Bowl picture with Joe Burrow at quarterback.
Gagnon touched on the Bengals contract stalemate by writing, “Trey Hendrickson could ultimately land a long-term extension with Cincinnati, but the reigning NFL sack leader does seem serious about his current contract stalemate. And we have seen the notoriously frugal Bengals bail on guys in situations like this before.”
Hendrickson would immediately make an impact for a productive defense that didn’t exactly feature an elite pass rushing presence in 2025.
Hendrickson joining Rashan Gary would give the Packers a formidable edge rushing duo to combat the numerous talented passing attacks of the NFC North.
The asking price from both the Bengals and Hendrickson himself are two big roadblocks to this proposal becoming a reality, but shouldn’t completely be ruled out while the sack specialist remains without a new deal entering 2025.
