Trade Pitch Sees Rangers Acquiring $31M Star in 5-Player Blockbuster

The New York Rangers are likely to make some major changes to their roster this offseason.

The website PuckPedia’s PuckGM tool lets users create their own trades. One user proposed a deal that would see the Rangers acquire Jason Robertson from the Dallas Stars.

Stars acquire:

The proposed deal would be a blockbuster as New York would give up four young NHL players and a draft pick for Robertson.

New York would acquire Robertson, whose name has come up in trade rumors. Robertson is in the final year of his four-year, $31 million deal with the Stars. He would be a first-line player for the Rangers and shake up the core, which is something the Rangers are looking to do. He recorded 35 goals and 45 assists for 80 points in 82 games.

In return, the Rangers would trade a second-round pick and four young players. New York would trade Othmann, who was selected 16th overall in 2021. Othmann has struggled to find his footing in the NHL as he recorded 0 goals and 2 assists in 22 games.

Perrault, meanwhile, was a first-round pick in 2023 and projects to be a middle-six forward in the NHL. He skated in 5 games last season, recording 0 points.

Schneider, meanwhile, would be a big part of the return as he is a legit top-four defenseman in the NHL. Schneider was a first-round pick in 2019 and is a physical defenseman. He recorded 6 goals and 15 assists for 21 points in 80 games.

The final player New York would deal is Jones, who’s a pending RFA. The defenseman could be used as a trade chip or be on the Stars’ third-pairing.

Stars Shopping Robertson

After Dallas was eliminated in the Western Conference Finals, the team could make some major changes this offseason.

It was reported that Robertson was made available and has been confirmed by several insiders. Robertson would be the biggest name available in a trade, and NHL insider Frank Seravalli of DailyFaceoff recently added the scoring winger to his trade bait board.

“The Dallas Stars have some franchise-altering decisions to make this summer. Is Robertson one of the foundational pillars? Or is he a player they can live without? His season was down then up,” Seravalli wrote. “The first half cost him a roster spot on Team USA at the 4 Nations. The second half he was one of the best players in the league, finishing with 28 goals and 57 points in 48 games. And then, on a team with limited cap space and a roster to fill out, what will that next contract cost? And are the Stars willing to meet it? Players like Robertson don’t come around often.”

It likely would cost a haul to acquire Robertson, but the Stars are at least open to talks about him.

Rangers Considering Everything This Offseason

New York failed to make the playoffs last season, and the Rangers are looking to get back into the playoffs right away.

Entering the offseason, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported that everything is on the table for the Rangers and general manager Chris Drury.

“The Rangers are considering an awful lot of things,” Friedman said. “Like after the season they had last year, there are very few things that are off the table. Chris Drury has got a lot out there and he basically wants to know if you want to talk to them about something, just reach out because he’s gotta know everything that’s on the table for him.”

The Rangers enter the offseason with just $8.42 million in cap space.
