The New York Rangers are expected to be sellers ahead of the NHL trade deadline, and one former top prospect is likely to be traded.
Heavy.com has a trade idea that sees the Rangers trading Brennan Othmann to the Boston Bruins in an intriguing move.
Rangers acquire:
- Fabian Lysell
- 2026 fourth-round pick (Tampa Bay)
Bruins acquire:
The proposed deal is an intriguing move as Boston and New York trade former first-round picks who haven’t panned out. Boston, meanwhile, adds one of their three fourth-round picks to make the deal a bit fairer.
The Rangers would acquire a fourth-round pick and Lysell, who has spent the year in the AHL. He was selected 21st overall in the 2021 NHL Draft by the Bruins, but has struggled to pan out and could use a change of scenery. Lysell is in the final year of his entry-level deal and is an RFA at the end of the season. He’s skated in 12 career NHL games, recording 1 goal and 2 assists for 3 points. Lysell could get some playing time with the Rangers down the stretch and prove he can be an NHL player.
In return, the Rangers would deal Othmann, whose time with the team seems to be coming to an end. Othmann was selected 16th overall in 2021, but he has struggled to make the Rangers lineup. He’s skated in 17 games this season, recording 1 goal. With the Bruins, he could be a third-line forward and add some more youth to the lineup.
Rangers Coach Explains Why Othmann Was Sent to AHL
With New York being last in the Eastern Conference, many expected Othmann to get a runway with the Rangers.
However, ahead of the trade deadline, Othmann was sent down to the AHL, which likely ended his time with the team. After the demotion, Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan said Othmann was too inconsistent.
“I think there are elements of his game that have to continue to improve in order for him to establish himself as an NHL player,” Sullivan said of Othmann. … “I just think it has been a little bit of an inconsistent game.
“There have been times when he’s made a positive impact on the game, there have been others when he hasn’t. We’ve talked a lot to him about attention to detail, bringing in a reliable, conscientious game. If you’re playing in a bottom six-role, and you’re not filling the net on the offensive side of the rink, then your contributions have to be in those areas. Those are the areas we’ve worked with Otter to try to help him.”
Othmann has skated in just 42 career NHL games.
New York Likely to Trade Othmann
With Othmann in the final year of waiver exemption, it makes sense for the Rangers to trade the former first-round pick.
Othmann would be claimed off waivers, and Rangers insider Peter Baugh of The Athletic expects the team to trade him so he can get NHL minutes.
“Simply put, it isn’t working out for the young winger in New York,” Baugh wrote. “The Rangers should do what’s best for both themselves and the player and move him before Friday’s trade deadline. The return won’t be special, but president and general manager Chris Drury has to cut his losses. Othmann’s value doesn’t appear like it’s going to increase anytime soon.”
So, it does appear Othmann’s time with the Rangers organization is nearly over.
