Trade Pitch Sees Red Wings Acquiring $49M Star Forward to Bolster Offense

The Detroit Red Wings could use another top-six forward, and one trade idea has them looking at a Western Conference team to bolster their offense.

Heavy.com proposed a deal that would see the Red Wings acquire star offensive player Troy Terry from the Anaheim Ducks.

The proposed deal would be an intriguing one as Detroit adds a top-six forward who can add much-needed offense to the lineup for their first-round pick, and a young NHL player.

The Red Wings would acquire Terry, who can be a top-six forward and also play on the power play. His name has come up in trade talks as he has five years left on his seven-year $49 million deal, which is a very fair cap hit. Terry recorded 21 goals and 34 assists for 55 points in 77 games. His career high is 37 goals.

In return, the Red Wings would deal Berggren, whose role would diminish by bringing in Terry. The 24-year-old signed a one-year, $1.825 million deal with Detroit and would be a third-line player for Anaheim, and would help replace Terry. His age also fits in better with the Ducks’ young core. Berggren recorded 12 goals and 12 assists for 24 points in 75 games last season.

The Red Wings would also give up their 2026 first-round pick, which would be tough to part with. But, given Detroit hasn’t made the playoffs in nine years, the Red Wings should go all in.

Red Wings GM Likely to Explore Market to Bolster Roster

Detroit had a relatively quiet free agency, which was always going to be the plan.

Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman said it was likely to be quiet as the team was going to explore the trade market instead. After the top free agents re-signed with their teams and Nikolaj Ehlers signed with the Carolina Hurricanes, the team may look at the trade market.

“Anybody can go and look at the list of the potential free agents and see there aren’t that many guys you would think will have an impact,” Yzerman said. “There are very few this year, for whatever reason…

“It’s just there aren’t a lot of options right now,” Yzerman added. “Everybody wants, the teams I’m talking to, they want players. Just like we want players. What do we have to offer? I don’t want to trade our core players. You’re looking to add to your team, (using) future assets for that. Right now teams are all looking to add players to their teams. Kind of the same thing we’re trying to do.”

The Red Wings have over $12 million in cap space and have all their draft picks, except for 2026’s second-round pick, in the next three drafts to use as ammo for a trade.

Red Wings Having Quiet Offseason

Detroit did its big move at the NHL draft, acquiring goalie John Gibson from the Ducks to solidify the position.

In free agency, Yzerman and the Red Wings have been quiet as Detroit signed forward Mason Appleton to a two-year deal, winger James van Riemsdyk to a one-year deal, defenseman Jacob Bernard-Docker to a one-year deal, and defenseman Ian Mitchell to a one-year deal.

The Red Wings have focused on adding more depth to the roster in free agency.
