The slow start to the 2025 NFL season for Philadelphia Eagles WR A.J. Brown has started to drum up some wild scenarios regarding the future of the three-time Pro Bowl wideout.
One such scenario comes in the form of the defending Super Bowl champs parting ways with their top receiver in exchange for a pair of Day 2 draft picks in a recent trade proposal.
Trade Proposal Sees the Philadelphia Eagles Trade A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots in Exchange for Two Second-Round Picks
Alexander Kay of Bleacher Report proposed a potential deal involving Eagles WR A.J. Brown being sent to New England could put the Patriots over the top in the AFC.
“Brown has been struggling to find his footing in 2025, catching just 14 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown. Despite the slow start, the 28-year-old isn’t too far removed from a series of world-class campaigns such as his 2023 Pro Bowl season in which he posted a 106/1,456/7 line on 158 targets,” wrote Kay. With the Eagles still managing to get off to a 4-0 start despite Brown’s shortcomings, they may be amenable to dealing him to New England. His services won’t come cheap, but the Pats shouldn’t hesitate to create a standout, veteran-laden receiving corps led by Diggs and Brown.”
The trade compensation Kay proposed would see the Patriots send both their 2026 and 2027 second-round picks to Philadelphia to acquire the three-time Pro Bowler.
Is There Any Real Chance the Eagles Will Trade A.J. Brown?
This deal makes a ton of sense for the Patriots, but there is a strong case to be made that dealing A.J. Brown would significantly hamper the Eagles’ goal to repeat as Super Bowl champions in 2025.
Is Brown rightfully frustrated that he has just 14 receptions for 151 yards and one score through the first games of the season? Yes. Does trading away an elite wide receiver in the middle of his prime make the Eagles a better team in 2025. Objectively, the answer is no.
The Eagles‘ passing game has gotten off to a slow start, but so has the running game. This offense is clearly still trying to figure some things out under new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo.
The individual struggles of a talented player in Philadelphia aren’t exclusive to Brown in 2025. DeVonta Smith is sitting at 17 receptions for 158 yards and one score through the first four games, which is a far cry from the type of production he has seen in this Philly offense too.
Saquon Barkley rushed for over 2,000 yards last season, but is currently averaging just 3.08 yards per carry in 2025.
Despite all of the head-scratching numbers we are seeing from Pro Bowl-caliber players in this offense, they are still undefeated through the first month of the season.
When Brown has shown frustration in the past, it has generally led to some big performances in short order. The Ole Miss product is just one game removed from a dominant six-reception for 109 yards and a score performance against the Los Angeles Rams — where he was instrumental in their comeback effort.
Brown is off to an unusually slow start to this season, but trading him off the team would make very little sense to a franchise that has their eyes set on one goal this year — hoisting the Lombardi Trophy for a second straight season.
