Travis Kelce Not Taylor Swift’s Only Chiefs Reference on ‘Showgirl’ Album

With their highly publicized relationship and, as of August, engagement it should hardly be surprising that Taylor Swift included numerous allusions to her fiancé, Kansas City Chiefs future Hall of Fame tight end Travis Kelce, on her record-breaking hit new album, Life of a Showgirl.

But Kelce is apparently not the only person connected to the Chiefs to merit a mention — albeit without being named — on the new Swift album which opened with 309 million streams on the Spotify platform alone in the first 24 hours of its release.

Amazon Music and Apple Music also confirmed that the album set first-day records for streams on their platforms.

Multiple Supposed References to Kelce

Many of the references to Kelce have already been meticulously catalogued by Swift-watchers, perhaps most of all her not-too-subtly-titled track “Wood,” which E! News called Swift’s “most NSFW” song ever and which appears to be an ode to what the singer and lyricist euphemistically refers to as the “Redwood tree” belonging to an unnamed lover who, Swift says in the song “opened my thighs.”

According to analysis by People Magazine, at least five other tracks on the 12-song album contain references to Kelce, though is a less risqué vein.

Those tracks start with the first single off the album, “The Fate of Ophelia,” which according to People, “finds Swift singing about someone — likely Kelce — saving her from Ophelia’s tragic (and fatal) ending in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.”

The 35-year-old pop music megastar also includes references to Kelce in “Opalite,” “Eldest Daughter,” “Wi$h Li$t,” and “Honey,” according to the People unpacking of Swift’s lyrics.

Another Song With Chiefs Reference

And then there is the track “CANCELLED!” which fans online and many Swift-whisperers believe is all about another person closely associated with the Chiefs — Brittany (Matthews) Mahomes, wife of Chiefs three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The couple, both 30 years old, week married in March of 2022 and now have three children.

Swift and the quarterback’s wife have reportedly become close friends since Swift began a relationship with Kelce and became a fixture as Chiefs‘ home games, often sharing a luxury box with Brittany Mahomes and other guests and family members.

But Brittany Mahomes became the center of controversy for her support of Donald Trump in 2024. Swift publicly endorsed Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election.

Brittany Mahomes at Center of Controversies

While it is debatable whether Brittany Mahomes was actually “cancelled” for her apparent backing of Trump, according to New York Post Page Six, she is most likely the subject of Swift’s lyrics to the song.

“Good thing I like my friends cancelled / I like ’em cloaked in Gucci and in scandal,” Swift sings on the track. “Like my whiskey sour / And poison thorny flowers / Welcome to my underworld / Where it gets quite dark / At least you know exactly who your friends are / They’re the ones with matching scars.”

Given that Swift is one of most celebrated and famous pop stars in the world, with an estimated fortune of $1.6 billion, her claim to inhabit an “underworld” where “it gets quite dark” seems like poetic license at best.

Mahomes has been involved in a handful of controversies since she’s stepped into the public eye as Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ wife, including backlash last year for liking a post on Donald Trump’s Instagram and in 2022 when she was seen spilling champagne on rival fans from her suite at a game. But even after speculation that Swift would distance herself from Mahomes, the two have remained close friends,” according to People Magazine.
