In the latest instalment of celebrity football club owners, Tyson Fury and Zlatan Ibrahimovic are planning to buy non-league Morecambe, according to reports.

We have seen Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney lead Wrexham from non-league to the upper echelons of the Championship in recent years.

American Football superstar Tom Brady also has a keen eye on the English second tier, having bought into Birmingham City amid huge investment into the club.

Gary Neville and David Beckham are hoping Salford City will eventually be competing as high up the pyramid as the Championship, with the club they part own playing in the League Two play-off final on Monday.

The Sun report that Fury and Ibrahimovic want in on the action and are planning to buy Morecambe FC, the former heavyweight champion’s local club.

A source told the Sun that the two iconic sportsmen want to go down the Wrexham route and make a Netflix documentary on their journey with the club.

The report went as far as naming the title of the project: ‘Rise of Morecambe’.

The pair have long been friends, ever since the Swede played for Manchester United and would go to the gym with the Gypsy King.

The 44-year-old retired from playing in 2023 after a second stint at AC Milan and played for Manchester United from 2016-18.

He had a stellar career, also playing for the likes of Barcelona, Inter, Juventus, PSG and Ajax, while winning 122 caps for Sweden.

Ibrahimovic already has experience in club ownership, having bought a significant stake in Swedish side Hammarby in 2019.

Morecambe would be a long way from the playing career Ibrahimovic was used to, having been relegated from the National League this season.

The Shrimps have suffered back-to-back relegations after finishing 22nd this season and will now drop into the National League North.

They won just nine of their 46 league games, conceding 103 goals, comfortably the most in the division.

It continues a rapid decline for a club that was in League One in the 2022/23 season and has suffered great financial difficulties.

This is not the first time Fury has been linked with buying Morecambe, where he already owns a gym, having revealed he was offered the club in October 2022.

‘I’ve been offered to buy Morecambe. I own the training facilities and gym. So who knows?’ Fury told talkSPORT nearly four years ago.

‘So I was thinking I invest X amount of millions in them. Basically throw it at them and keep them going up.’
