UNC Coach Bill Belichick Spotted at High School Game During Bye Week

It has been an interesting week for North Carolina and head coach Bill Belichick. Rumors have been swirling about his future in Chapel Hill coming to an end sooner rather than later.

Reports surfaced about Belichick and the hierarchy at UNC discussing buyout options on Wednesday. Later that night, Belichick and athletic director Bubba Cunningham released statements about the former New England Patriots coach’s commitment to the program.

Read into that what you will. After a disappointing 38-10 loss at home to Clemson last Saturday, the Tar Heels are on their second bye of the season this weekend. Their next game is on October 17 at California. Whether or not Belichick is on the sideline is anyone’s guess. A photo on X surfaced of him recruiting on Friday night, in Maryland, during his team’s second bye week.

Bill Belichick Seen Recruiting During UNC’s Bye Week

Belichick was spotted on the sideline on Friday night in a highly anticipated matchup in Maryland between Good Counsel and DeMatha, according to Emmett Siegel of the Washington Post.

Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports noted Friday night that Belichick was hitting the recruiting trail during the Tar Heels’ second bye week of 2025. He was recruiting a couple of weeks ago in Massachusetts during UNC’s first bye week.

After losing to the Tigers last week, Belichick spoke about recruiting. He gave an outline about the future at North Carolina with recruits.

“We’re honest with them, honest that we’re building, and if you want to be a part of a program that’s being built, then we’re here for you,” Belichick said.

Bill Belichick Preparing For His Future at North Carolina

Based on that comment and being at a game on Friday night between two powerhouse programs in Maryland, it doesn’t appear that Belichick is going anywhere soon.

On College GameDay on Saturday, former Alabama coach Nick Saban and analyst Kirk Herbstreit both defended Belichick. It would come as no surprise that Saban did, given how close the two are. Saban said that the six-time Super Bowl winner in Foxboro needs more time to build things at UNC.

As for the current times in Chapel Hill, North Carolina is 2-3 with seven ACC games remaining this year. Things have not gone as planned, as when the Tar Heels lose, they get blown out. That was the case against Clemson.

“The main thing we need to do is to keep doing what we’re doing but do them better,” Belichick said after the Clemson loss. “Fundamentally, we’re not doing the wrong things, we’re just not doing them well enough.

“It’s a lack of concentration and part of that is coaching, too, so I’ll take my share of the responsibility.”

If North Carolina is going to turn things around and become bowl eligible, a win at Cal next weekend needs to happen. Everything that has come out of UNC this week doesn’t sound promising that this season will end well. A loss to the Golden Bears next Friday night could make things more uncomfortable around the Tar Heels.
