Victor Wembanyama Fires Back At ‘Non-Subject’ Height Rumors

Set to begin his third NBA season with the San Antonio Spurs, Victor Wembanyama remains one of the highest-potential players in recent basketball memory. While injuries have marked his early career, the French center has shown signs of becoming one of the top players in NBA history.

Much of the anticipation about Wembanyama’s potential comes from his height, as currently listed at 7’5″, he is the tallest player in the league. With that height comes skill on both offense and defense, as on both sides of the ball, the 21-year-old has already shown immense promise.

However, even with his stature as the tallest player in the NBA, insider Brian Windhorst believes Wembanyama is even taller than he or the Spurs’ lead on. Weeks before the start of the 2025-26 season, Windhorst said he thinks the star is closer to the 7’7″ mark.

Now, with questions and rumors surrounding his true height, Wembanyama responded with perhaps not the answer many expected.

“Over the years, it’s become a non-subject to me, because in my opinion there’s so many more interesting things about me,” Wembanyama said at a Spurs press conference days before the start of the team’s season.

Wembanyama played in just 41 games for San Antonio last season after it was announced he was dealing with blood clots in his shoulder. In those games, he averaged 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 3.8 blocks, and was the favorite to win the Defensive Player of the Year award before he was ruled out

Victor Wembanyama On His Height Rumors

The young superstar made it clear he doesn’t care what his true height is. But at the same time, Wembanyama said that he is surprised many still bring it up, as he’s already the tallest player in the league.

“Sometimes I’m surprised that it’s still a conversation, because the truth is in my mind, it doesn’t really make a difference,” Wembanyama added. “I’m taller than anybody else. That’s all you need to know.”

Besides the Frenchman, the other tallest player in the NBA is Zach Edey. While Wembanyama’s official height has bounced from 7’3″ to 7’4″ to 7’5″, back to 7’4″ on the official league website, Edey’s height remained constant in his rookie season.

Though there are questions still about his height, even at 7’4″ or 7’5″, depending on the source, Wembanyama is one of the tallest players in NBA history. If Windhorst’s claim is ever proven true, the center would be tied with Manute Bol and Gheorghe Muresan as the tallest players the game has ever seen.

Bleacher Report recently did a deep dive on Wembanyama’s true height, and after much research and photo comparison, Lee Escobedo concluded that the 7’4″ mark is a conservative estimate.

“While no single photo proves it conclusively, the aggregate evidence suggests his true height may exceed even San Antonio’s listed height,” he wrote. “At roughly 7’5″ with an 8-foot wingspan and a 9-foot-7 standing reach, Wemby possesses a scale the league has never seen, combined with mobility.”

Spurs’ Early Season Injury Concerns

Wembanyama is healthy and set to start the Spurs’ season opener against the Dallas Mavericks, which is a good sign for the franchise. However, while San Antonio has done a lot to put pieces around the franchise star, many of those players won’t be available on opening night.

According to the Spurs’ injury report, they will be without De’Aaron Fox, Jeremy Sochan, Kelly Olynyk, and Lindy Waters to begin the season.

Fox, after signing a four-year, $222 million deal, suffered a hamstring injury early in San Antonio’s training camp. He was the big-name addition for the team in February, but played just five games with Wembanyama last year. His absence is a bad sign for the team that hopes to take a step up in the Western Conference this year.

The injuries for Sochan, Olynyk, and Waters are all expected to be short-term, but San Antonio has yet to announce an official timeline or return date for any of them.

Wembanyama is expected to make another leap this season, but the rotational players will be key if San Antonio makes any waves in the West. However, the injury concerns have been an issue for the team over the past few years, and entering 2025-26, they have continued to trouble the team.
