The San Antonio Spurs have their best player back, and they seem to have the best version of him. Victor Wembanyama is fully cleared to play after a months-long hiatus with blood clots, and he made the most of his summer.
Not only is he stronger than ever before, but his mental strength is at an all-time high. He went viral this summer after training with monks in solitude in China, but he also spent plenty of time on the court.
In order to hone his game on both sides of the ball, he spent extended time with NBA legends Hakeem Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett, soaking up everything they told him.

Victor Wembanyama Breaks Down NBA Legends
Both Garnett and Olajuwon were MVPs, champions, rebounding leaders, and Defensive Player of the Year at one point or another during their careers. Olajuwon was often touted as a cerebral star who could dominate on both ends of the floor. Garnett, meanwhile, was an intense competitor and the league’s greatest trash-talker.
Despite (or because of) their differences, Wembanyama cited both experiences as incredibly valuable to his development as a star.
“His advice, even though it was a lot, felt like I was absorbing it every day,” said Wembanyama of the three days he spent with Olajuwon. “And he still got it, and it’s natural for him. And it looked like it was a pleasure for him to teach. So I would want to go again for sure.”
Wembanyama promised that fans will get to see his take on The Dream Shake this season. Footwork was an area of focus in their workouts. With Garnett, the main area of study was how to carry oneself on the court.
Victor Wembanyama Sounds Off on Garnett
As expected, the workouts with KG were vastly different. Garnett is intense and has maintained an active media career after his playing days were over. He knows how to navigate the modern media landscape and the pressures that come with it.
While Garnett is one of the best defenders of all time, he and Wembanyama focused more on off-court excellence and how to bring out some competitive nature.
“Super interesting,” declared Wemby of Garnett. “He’s got a very unique perspective on the relationship, you know, as a leader, relationship with teammates and opponents, and even the refs, and even the media, everybody. I think he’s really smart emotionally. He’s got this energy, but he knows how to channel it and use it for the best.”
In years past, up-and-coming stars have been shunned by legends looking to preserve their legacy, although with Wembanyama, it seems like the league is excited to see just how good he can be.
In San Antonio, Wembanyama has constant access to David Robinson and Tim Duncan, but he’s shown an eagerness to absorb as much knowledge as possible from as many different sources as he can meet.
