Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer may not be able to play in the Oklahoma vs Texas game on October 11. The star quarterback suffered a major hand injury during the September 20 game against the Auburn Tigers, but he kept playing for the rest of the game. Now, sports analysts believe they have found video showing the moment when Mateer’s thumb was injured.
Watch the Play When Mateer Broke a Bone in His Hand
According to On3, the video below shows the moment when Mateer broke a bone in his throwing hand during the first quarter against the Tigers. At the time, neither team had scored. The play happened at 2nd and 14.
OU went on to win 24 to 17.
In the video, you can see a Tigers player run into Mateer’s arm just as he’s throwing.
Carson Feld of Sooners SI posted a closer-up video of the moment it happened.
“Fairly positive this is the play where #Sooners QB John Mateer suffered his hand injury against Auburn,” he wrote.
Keldrick Fauk, #15, can be seen colliding into Mateer’s hand during the follow through of his throw.
Some fans are surprised that Mateer was allowed to continue playing after the injury.
One person wrote in reply to On3’s video, “Wow can’t believe OU risked the rest of their season for an asterisk win.”
Others are simply impressed that Mateer continued to play so well after the injury, leading the team to victory.
“Which is wild because bro was still throwin missles after this,” one person wrote in reply to On3’s video.
Eddie Radosevich, a correspondent for On3, wrote: “It’s incredible John Mateer finished the Auburn game completing 15 of his last 16 passes, including 11 in a row to end the game with a broken thumb.”
Mateer Is Having Surgery on Wednesday, September 24
Pete Nakos of On3 reported that Mateer’s surgery will be on his right thumb on September 24.
Pete Thamel of ESPN wrote that Mateer broke a bone in his hand.
“Sources: John Mateer’s injury is a broken bone in his right (throwing) hand that he suffered in the first quarter against Auburn on Saturday night,” Thamel said. “The estimated timeline after surgery is expected to be about a month, as the surgery is considered straight-forward.”
If it takes Mateer a month to recover, then he won’t return until after the Texas-OU game. Michael Hawkins Jr. will play in his place this week and will likely be the starter against the Longhorns if Mateer isn’t back yet.
