Vikings’ Max Brosmer Gets Brutally Honest About J.J. McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings got the dreaded news that’s become familiar over the last two seasons; J.J. McCarthy is injured.

Tom Pelissero posted the update via X:

Vikings QB JJ McCarthy underwent further imaging that showed a hairline fracture in his throwing hand, coach Kevin O’Connell said. He’s out on Thursday.”

It’s become an expectation on every snap on this point. J.J. McCarthy has now suffered his fifth documented injury in 10.5 games. The good news, however, is that there is a chance that he could play in Week 18 against the Green Bay Packers, also per Pelissero:

O’Connell said McCarthy will not need surgery for the hairline fracture, which he called ‘very small. But he’s not expected to go on a short week.

This means that QB Max Brosmer will get the start on Christmas against the Detroit Lions. It will be his first start at home. His first career start came against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 13. As we all know, it didn’t go well. Brosmer threw 19 completions on 30 attempts, 126 yards, 0 TD’s, and 4 INT’s in the contest.

Max Brosmer Speaks on J.J. McCarthy

GettyQB Max Brosmer will get the start on Thursday against the Detroit Lions.

Max Brosmer spoke to the media on Tuesday, touching on sharing the QB room with J.J. McCarthy and John Wolford:

Yeah, we have a great quarterback room. I always talk about it being from the top down with with Josh and JT. You know, how they talk about football and how they talk about just, you know, being a quarterback in the facility.
It trickles down to the rest of us and to have guys like John Wolford,  JJ and I in the room. We work so well together. You know, John being in the league for a little bit longer than us and JJ and I are in our first and second year. So, it’s a group effort. It really is.
Brosmer was asked about J.J. McCarthy:
Mentally he’s such a a competitor. He always wants to be influenced in the game in a positive way, and that’s one that’s one of his best attributes. He’s such a competitor. He’s a very emotional player in a good way.
For him to not be on the field, it’s really tough for him. But to show his character, you know, he’s the first one out here, you know, cheering on when it’s not him. And that’s just that speaks uh to the kind of man he is, the kind of quarterback he is in the facility, and the guys respect him for that, and to have that from the room when I’m the guy today or this week, it’s really cool to see and have in my corner.”

Brosmer was asked about his preparation on Tuesday, as we get closer to the Christmas Day showdown:

Yeah, obviously you know physical front, physical in the box. You know, really athletic on the outside and the structure of the defense and the shell. You know for us, it goes back to our preparation what we’re going to put on tape on the weekend.
That’s going to be physical football. It’s going to be smart and efficient football, and staying on schedule is the recipe. Keeping the ball in our hands and staying on schedule. I feel like you can say that about a lot of games this year and for us, it’s just going to focus on, you know, one play at a time. Keeping the ball in our hands and not trying to do too much. Just take what they give you, go all the way down the field, and get points.”
McCarthy won’t be active at all on Sunday, therefore, John Wolford will serve as QB2 for these Vikings.
