Vikings Shockingly Linked to $40 Million Quarterback

The Minnesota Vikings may be looking at another off-season of questions regarding their QB room.

The concern for the position isn’t quite at the levels as it was after their 23-6 loss to the Green Bay Packers earlier this season. That contest was a low-point in the development of J.J. McCarthy. The contest saw him complete only 12 passes on 19 attempts for 87 yards and 2 interceptions.

McCarthy has since rebounded, most recently in the Vikings last two outings. In those two games combined, McCarthy has completed 31 of his 47 pass attempts for 413 yards. He added on 5 passing touchdowns and 1 rushing touchdown in those winnings efforts.

Two weeks of solid performances doesn’t stop the NFL rumor mill from going ’round, however.

Vikings Linked to QB Justin Fields

In a recent post on The Athletic, author Jeff Howe subtly floated the idea of Justin Fields joining the Minnesota Vikings in the 2026 off-season.

Consider what Howe has to say regarding the status of Fields, assuming the Jets cut bait with him this off-season:

No, Fields hasn’t played consistently well enough for any of his three teams, but his replacements didn’t play any better. At the very least, it’s fair to ask if Fields has ever been put in the best position to succeed. That’s why it’s up to Fields to find the right landing spot, as Daniel Jones, Sam Darnold and Mac Jones have all recently done.

Fields should seek out the Kansas City Chiefs, Colts or Vikings.”

This would obviously be quite the turn of events in the Twin Cities. Fields, formerly of the Bears, was someone that Vikings fans often looked forward to watching their favorite team play against.

With that taken into account, it would still theoretically make sense for these Vikings. The Adofo-Mensah/O’Connell regime seem to get kicks out of being a rehabilitation for disappointing quarterbacks with a first round pedigree.

If Fields were to throw on the purple and gold, he would join Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones as patients of the Kevin O’Connell Center for Quarterback Rehabilitation.

A Fields Signing Could Make Sense for J.J. McCarthy

All due respect to Justin Fields, but it wouldn’t be a tall hill to climb for McCarthy to win the 2026 starting job if Justin were brought in as “competition”.

Minnesota needs a veteran QB as it stands in 2026, whether that’s a blockbuster trade for a Joe Burrow to be the full-fledged starter or a low-level like Fields to be the backup. Fields wouldn’t pose much of a threat to the starting job, and that’s something that the Vikings could value in order to “protect” J.J. McCarthy.

Expect Justin Fields’ name to appear in more talks about the Vikings’ QB2 job in 2026 as we inch closer towards the 2026 off-season.
