Vinicius Junior has struck a deal to extend his contract at Real Madrid, bringing an end to rumours linking the superstar forward with Arsenal.
The 26-year-old has put pen to paper on a six-year deal at the Bernabeu, tying him to the club until 2032.
Vinicius’ future at Madrid had become the subject of intense speculation this summer, with the Brazilian’s previous deal due to expire in 12 months’ time.
Arsenal were alerted to Vinicius’ precarious contract situation and sensed a possible opening, with Mikel Arteta said to be ‘absolutely smitten’ with the idea of luring the attacker to north London.

Reports earlier this week indicated the Gunners were prepared to make Vinicius the highest-paid player in Premier League history, intent on adding stardust to their title-winning frontline.
But Arsenal’s hopes of pulling off a sensational coup are officially dead in the water after a positive round of discussions between Vinicius’ camp and Madrid officials on Wednesday.
‘Real Madrid CF and Vinicius Junior. have agreed to extend the contract of our player, who is now tied to the club until June 30, 2032,’ a statement on Madrid’s official website confirmed.
‘Vinicius Junior arrived at Real Madrid in July 2018, at the age of 18. In his eight seasons wearing our shirt, he has played 375 matches, scoring 128 goals and winning 14 titles: 2 Champions Leagues, 3 Club World Cups, 2 UEFA Super Cups, 3 La Liga titles, 1 Copa del Rey, and 3 Spanish Super Cups.
‘His contribution to all these titles has been transcendental because of his play, his assists and his goals, including those he scored in the last two Champions League finals that Real Madrid has won: the Fourteenth (Paris, 2022) and the Fifteenth (London, 2024).’
The statement concluded: ‘Vinicius Junior. has become one of the most important players in one of the most successful periods in our history.’
The news will come as an almighty relief to Jose Mourinho, who made it clear he was vehemently opposed to the prospect of losing a player of Vinicius’ quality and profile in the build-up to the new season.
Vinicius had initially held negotiations over a contract renewal in January 2025 and then again in the wake of last year’s Club World Cup.
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Vinicius had been ‘open’ to completing a move to the Emirates had he opted against renewing his terms in the Spanish capital this summer.
Vinicius has been determined to resolve his future ever since returning home from a disappointing World Cup campaign with Brazil, telling close friends how he was desperate not to leave Madrid in a position where he could depart for free.
This has largely been driven by Vinicius’ desire to give back to Madrid what he feels he owes the club after the ‘gamble’ they took on him when signing him as a teenager from Flamengo in 2018.
In that time, Vinicius has racked up 128 goals and 100 assists in 376 appearances for Los Blancos, while helping the Spanish side win 14 pieces of silverware including three La Liga titles and two Champions League crowns.
After joining up with Madrid’s squad for pre-season training earlier this week, Vinicius lifted the lid on his initial conversations with Mourinho and the general mood in the camp.
‘It has gone very well, getting to know the new coach and the new players, and training very hard,’ he explained.
‘Mourinho wants me to be as I have always been: happy, cheerful, and playing my football.’
The 2024 Ballon d’Or runner-up added: ‘We have to prepare physically so that during the season we have fewer injuries and can count on everyone.
‘Yesterday, we had two sessions; today, just one. That’s how it goes. Today we did some gym work and short exercises to put more load on the legs. It was a good training session, and we all left very tired, but now it’s time to rest for tomorrow.
‘That’s how pre-season is, and we have to be ready.’
