Von Miller Won’t Apologize to Wil Lutz Over ‘Lou Holtz’: ‘Get Over Yourself’

Von Miller says he respects Denver Broncos kicker Wil Lutz, but he’s not saying sorry.

On the latest episode of his “Free Range with Von Miller” podcast, the Washington Commanders pass rusher finally addressed Lutz calling him out over a viral name mix-up, when Miller mistakenly referred to the kicker as “Lou Holtz.” And after laying out his side, the future Hall of Famer drew a hard line.

“It was definitely not any disrespect… it wasn’t anything personal,” Miller said, before adding, “I’m not even going to apologize for that… I’m not about to apologize for that.”

The comments came days after the Commanders’ overtime loss in Denver, a game Miller admitted still “hung on” him, in part because it came against the franchise where he became a superstar.

Von Miller Doubles Down After Wil Lutz Calls Out ‘Disrespect’

Miller explained that during a previous episode he praised Lutz for a strong season — including five game-winning field goals — but accidentally called him “Lou Holtz” while talking. He insisted it was an honest slip.

“I don’t even know how many times I’ve said Lou Holtz in my lifetime… it just kind of rolled off of my tongue,” he said. “It was definitely not any disrespect or anything like… ‘there’s only room in this town for one kicker’… it wasn’t anything like that.”

Lutz didn’t see it that way. Miller read the Broncos kicker’s response on air:

“I have a ton of respect for Von and what he’s done for this city and organization… future Hall of Famer… but it’s a shame after 10 years in the league he feels the need to disrespect my name.”

Miller then pointed out that Lutz spelled his first name with two Ns in the message.

“He couldn’t have been serious… and he spelled my name with two Ns. So how you like that? I’mma get you back, Vonn,” Miller joked.

From there, he turned up the heat.

“Get over yourself, bro, like it ain’t nothing like that… you think I’m just going to purposely take a shot at Lou Holtz — I mean, Wil Lutz?”

Even as he kept tripping over the name on purpose — “Lu Host, I mean Wil Lutz” — Miller circled back to his original point: he believes he was giving Lutz credit, not taking a shot.

“I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings, pal… but at the same time I’m not about to apologize for that,” he said.

What the Kicker ‘Beef’ Says About Von Miller

Miller put the entire exchange in the context of a brutal week: an overtime loss to his old team and watching his Texas A&M Aggies fall to Texas. He openly called himself a “sore loser” and said the Broncos game “still kind of hurts my heart.”

At the same time, he pushed back on the idea that he has anything against specialists.

“Don’t you think I got some type of beef with kickers because my friend, one of my best friends in the league, is a kicker,” Miller said, referencing former Broncos teammate Brandon McManus. “I love kickers… I feel like he attacked me.”

The contrast got sharper later in the episode. While talking about Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, Miller brought up an old moment where he mockingly called Kelce a “fake Gronkowski” after a viral hip-toss. This time, he made sure to say he was sorry.

“I didn’t apologize to the kicker earlier, no I did not,” Miller said. “But I apologized to Travis Kelce… I was wrong… he’s one of the GOATs, Hall of Famer… everything about Travis Kelce I was wrong.”

For Lutz, though, the non-apology stands.

What’s clear is that Miller’s not backing down in his back-and-forth with Denver’s kicker. He says he respects Wil Lutz and his season. He just isn’t apologizing for a name that, on his podcast at least, still keeps coming out as “Lou Holtz.”
