Warriors Face New Stephen Curry Concern After ‘Good’ Scrimmage

The Golden State Warriors received an encouraging sign when Stephen Curry returned to full-contact scrimmage this week, but a medical perspective suggests the path back may still carry uncertainty.

Curry described Tuesday’s five-on-five session as a positive step forward — while acknowledging the unpredictability that continues to define his recovery.

“It felt great,” Curry told ESPN after the scrimmage. “I’m checking the boxes. But with this, it’s always unpredictable because I don’t know how the knee will respond because it hasn’t responded well in the past attempts to get to this five-on-five level.”

Curry added that he is “right where I need to be for right now,” but emphasized that continued progress remains the key variable.

“I’m hoping that it continues until the weekend,” he said.

Medical Perspective Highlights Key Risk

GettyStephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors is dealing with a runner’s knee.

That uncertainty is consistent with how knee injuries are typically evaluated, according to Nirav Pandya.

“It can feel great after one or two scrimmages,” Pandya wrote on X. “But the return to high-level NBA games can cause symptoms to flare back up.”

Pandya, a professor of orthopedic surgery at UCSF and director of pediatric sports medicine, noted that the primary concern is not how the knee responds during a single session, but how it holds up over several days of increased intensity.

“The other issue to monitor is how the knee responds to several days of intensive activity,” he said.

Warriors Emphasizing Measured Progress

Golden State has taken a deliberate approach throughout Curry’s recovery, prioritizing sustained progress over short-term gains.

Head coach Steve Kerr called Tuesday’s scrimmage a “good day” but stressed that the evaluation process is far from complete.

“Yeah, today was a good day… he got out on the floor, played 5-on-5 and looked good,” Kerr said  on 95.7 The Game. “But it’s one good day… the next few days are really, really important.”

Kerr added that a return as soon as Sunday has not been ruled out, though the team continues to monitor Curry’s response closely.

Warriors Feeling Impact in Play-In Race

The stakes surrounding Curry’s return have grown as the season winds down.

The Warriors are 36–39 and have gone 9–16 during Curry’s absence, sliding to the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference — the final play-in position.

If the standings hold, Golden State would need to win two elimination games to advance to the playoffs, increasing the urgency to reintegrate its franchise player.

Tight Schedule Adds Pressure to Timeline

Golden State has little time to evaluate Curry before a pivotal stretch.

The Warriors face a back-to-back against the San Antonio Spurs and Cleveland Cavaliers before Sunday’s matchup with the Houston Rockets — a game that has emerged as a potential return window as the team looks to stabilize its play-in position.

Balancing Optimism With Reality

Curry’s comments reflect a careful balance between optimism and caution — one that aligns closely with the medical outlook.

While the scrimmage marked a meaningful step forward, both Curry and the Warriors understand that the next phase of his recovery will ultimately determine his availability.

For now, the progress is real.

But as both Curry’s experience and medical insight suggest, the outcome remains uncertain.
