Jonathan Kuminga could be on the move. The Golden State Warriors are reportedly discussing a potential three-team trade that would send the impressive young forward to the Sacramento Kings.
According to Ali Thanawalla and Tristi Rodriguez of NBC Sports Bay Area, the three-team deal could expand on the Kings’ sign-and-trade move for Dennis Schroder. The reported framework of the discussions between the Warriors, Kings and Detroit Pistons would see the trade look like this:
Kings Receive: Dennis Schroder and Jonathan Kuminga, both via separate sign-and-trades
Pistons Receive: Malik Monk
Warriors Receive: Dario Saric, Devin Carter and two future second-round picks
“The Warriors, Kings and Detroit Pistons are discussing a three-team blockbuster that would send Kuminga and veteran point guard Dennis Schröder to Sacramento in separate sign-and-trade deals, a source told NBC Sports California,” Thanawalla and Rodriguez reported. “The trade discussions remain fluid.”
The deal would end Kuminga’s tenure with the Warriors and immediately solve a headache for Mike Dunleavy Jr. However, the franchise may feel that it needs a better return for Kuminga, who has shown flashes of All-Star-level potential during his time in the Bay Area.
Saric Would Return to the Golden State Warriors
Saric spent the 2023-24 season with the Warriors. He became an important part of Steve Kerr’s bench rotation. In 64 games, he averaged 8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists while shooting 37.6% from deep on 3.1 attempts per game.
The Warriors need some additional size in the frontcourt. Saric already knows Kerr’s system and how to slot into a rotation that includes Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. He could easily become a valuable bench contributor, or at worst, a solid depth option.
Therefore, Golden State may consider Saric to be a key piece in any potential trade discussions. Still, the lack of a high-level talent heading back to the Warriors could become a sticking point for the franchise.
Warriors Reportedly ‘In Talks’ With Al Horford
According to NBA insider Brett Siegel, Boston Celtics big man Al Horford has been in talks with Golden State. He is an unrestricted free agent this summer.
“They’ve been in talks with Al Horford for the last couple of days,” Siegel wrote on X. “It could happen as early as tonight. (The) Ball is in Horford’s court, and what he ultimately decides.”
Horford is the sort of floor-spacing center the Warriors covet. The idea of pairing him with Saric as part of a front-court rotation is likely an enticing option for Kerr and the front office. Both bigs can play multiple positions, stretch the floor, and operate out of the post.
As the Warriors’ core gets older, the need for more talent in the middle of the floor grows. Kerr can’t ask Green and Curry to absorb significant amounts of contact the way they used to. Golden State is evolving its approach, and a string of floor spacing bigs it the logical next step.
So, regardless of what happens with Kuminga, Horford will likely remain a target for Golden State. Of course, they may need to move quickly. They won’t be the only team interested in the 2024 champion.
