The tumultuous Golden State Warriors season was thrown into more chaos Monday night when Steve Kerr and Draymond Green got into a heated exchange early in the third quarter of a 120-97 win over the Orlando Magic. The argument led to Green storming back into the locker room, causing some to question his professionalism. Stephen Curry, though, doesn’t view it that way.
After the game, Curry said he fully expects Green to remain professional and put aside his differences with Kerr, their longtime head coach.
“I don’t think so,” Curry said when asked if the Kerr-Green situation would linger, via The Athletic’s Nick Friedell.
“I know he came up here and talked about it. I haven’t had a chance to talk to [Green]. I’m pretty sure we know how to be professional, though.”
Steph Curry Downplays Incident
Curry, who had a game-high 26 points and six assists in the win, urged Warriors fans and media members to move past the incident and instead shed light on his team winning a second game in a row.
The 4-time NBA Champion said he was disappointed that the Kerr-Green argument overshadowed the positive vibes of a Warriors win against a tough Orlando team.
“The questions are a little bit more negative than they should be,” Curry said, via ESPN’s Anthony Slater, when asked about his head coach and defensive anchor’s tiff.
“I get why you’re asking them, but downstairs right now, the DJ has a good playlist going, the guys are getting their work in and we’re having a good time because we’re winning.”
‘Vibes Are Good Right Now’
With the win on Tuesday, the Warriors improved to 15-15, but remain four games behind the sixth-seeded Houston Rockets. Still, Curry is excited about the Christmas Day clash against the Dallas Mavericks, praising the current locker room vibes.
“It’s a little up and down,” Curry said of his team’s current state.
“As I’m sure any team that’s .500 experiences where right now we’re excited that we’re putting some good efforts together and it’s showing up with wins, but you don’t ever get too ahead of yourself. Just excited for another big game on Christmas Day, and hopefully we can keep it going. So the vibes are good right now.”
The Draymond Green-Steve Kerr incident occurred at the 8:31 mark of the third quarter when the Magic had a 71-66 lead. Following a bad pass turnover by Green at the 8:47 mark, Warriors center Quinten Post committed a take foul, leading to a three-point turnaround that saw Desmond Green make a foul shot and Anthony Black a turnaround jumper. Before Green’s turnover, the Magic had only a two-point lead. Frustrated by the sequence, Kerr called a timeout. After the timeout, Brandin Podziemski subbed in for Green, who did not return to the bench.
Interestingly, Kerr told Green he was not going to put him back into the game, which led to the former Defensive Player of the Year storming into the locker room.
“He wasn’t going back in,” Kerr said of Green. “He went back to the locker room. We moved forward and the guys played great.”
