Crystal Palace take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final today, but the famous trophy is not the only thing at stake at Wembley.

City can lift their eighth FA Cup and avoid the embarrassment of a trophy-less season, while Palace have the chance to win their first ever major piece of silverware.

Moreover, the victor will be guaranteed European football for next season but which competition they and their Premier League rivals play in is yet to be determined.

With that in mind, here’s a guide to how Premier League teams qualify for the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, and how the result of the FA Cup final affects it.

Ordinarily, the Premier League top four qualify for the Champions League, with title winners Liverpool the only side to book their place so far.

But thanks to the performances of the English clubs in Europe this season, the Premier League will receive a European Performance Spot from UEFA, meaning the top five will qualify.

Additionally, you can also qualify by winning the Champions League or Europa League, and with the latter final being an all-English affair, six Premier League teams will play in the UCL next season.

Tottenham face Manchester United in the final in Bilbao next Wednesday – a battle between 16th and 17th in the Premier League table.

How Premier League clubs qualify for the Europa League

Ordinarily, fifth-place in the Premier League qualifies a club for the Europa League but, thanks to the European Performance Spot, sixth is enough this season.

Qualification is also granted to the winners of the FA Cup – more on that later.

One can also qualify by winning the Conference League. This year’s final sees Chelsea take on Spanish side Real Betis on May 28.

How Premier League clubs qualify for the Conference League

In England, the winners of the Carabao Cup qualify for the Conference League. This season that is Newcastle United following their 2-1 final win over Liverpool in March.

How would the FA Cup final result impact European qualification?

This is where things get a little complicated.

If the winners of the FA Cup or Carabao Cup finish in the top six, thereby qualifying them for the Champions League or Europa League, then the European place they receive for winning the cup passes on to the next best team in the table.

So, if Man City, currently sixth in the table, win at Wembley and finish in the top six, seventh-place will qualify for the Europa League.

But if Crystal Palace, 12th in the table, triumph, the Eagles will play in Europe for the first time in their history.

Additionally, Carabao Cup winners Newcastle, currently third in the table are likely to achieve a top six finish.

If that happens and if Palace win the FA Cup, seventh-place will qualify for the Conference League. If the Man City scenario plays out, the spot will go to eighth-place.
