Liverpool are on the verge of winning their second Premier League title after extending their lead over Arsenal over the weekend.

With their focus firmly on their Champions League quarter-final with Real Madrid, Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw with Brentford on Saturday evening.

This opened the door for Liverpool to widen the gap between the title contenders to 13 points, which they did with a nervy 2-1 against West Ham on Sunday.

A late Andy Robertson own goal cancelled out Luis Diaz’s opener at Anfield and threatened to continue the Reds’ stumbling form but captain Virgil van Dijk was on hand to score an 89th minute winner.

With just six games of the season to go, it really is a question of not if but when Liverpool will win the title, but just how soon can Arne Slot’s side get their hands on the trophy?

When could Liverpool win the Premier League title?

The earliest date Liverpool could officially be declared Premier League champions is Sunday, April 20 when they travel to Leicester City.

For that to happen, Arsenal would need to lose at Ipswich Town on the same day followed by the Reds beating the Foxes, which would give Liverpool an unassailable lead of 16 points with five games to go.

However, both Ipswich and Leicester are destined for relegation so the likelihood of the Tractor Boys beating the Gunners isn’t high.

Should, as expected, both Liverpool and Arsenal win that day, the next opportunity to be crowned champions will be on Wednesday, April 23 if the Gunners lose at home to Crystal Palace.

If they avoid defeat to the Eagles, the Reds need only match their result when they welcome Tottenham to Anfield on Sunday, April 27.

This would be only Liverpool’s second Premier League title but the first they’d be able to properly celebrate with fans after their 2019/20 triumph during the Covid-19 lockdown.

It is a remarkable achievement for head coach Slot in his first season since replacing the great Jurgen Klopp, with the Reds losing just two league games under the Dutchman.

Should they win their remaining six fixtures, they will finish the season on 94 points, their third best tally behind only the 2019/20 and 2018/19 campaigns.

Will Arsenal give Liverpool a Guard of Honour?

As is tradition, should Liverpool win the Premier League title before the final game of the season, opposing teams will give them a Guard of Honour when they walk onto the pitch ahead of matches.

That means that if, as expected, the title is wrapped up against Tottenham, Arsenal should give Liverpool’s players a Guard of Honour when they meet at Anfield on May 11.

The same will apply for Chelsea, Brighton and Crystal Palace.

The Gunners honoured the tradition in 2020, though Mikel Arteta’s side were not title contenders then so it remains to be seen whether they will follow suit this time round.

Thankfully for the north London club, they will most likely not have to witness Van Dijk lift the trophy in person as that should be saved for Liverpool’s last home game against Palace on May 25.

Should Arsenal give Liverpool a Guard of Honour?

  • Yes, it’s tradition and respectful
  • No, adopt a siege mentality

‘I don’t care where we win it. We know we have to win two more games, which has been on 32 occasions difficult enough for us,’ Slot said following the West Ham win.

‘First win two and that is the only thing we should focus on, and each week try to improve more and more to give us a better chance to win a game next week against Leicester.

‘We have shown in the last 32 games there have only been two or three wins that were quite comfortable. The rest were very, very, very hard work. That is our only focus – winning a game of football.’
