Who Is Chris Gotterup? 5 Facts About PGA Tour Breakout Star

Chris Gotterup is starting to make the rest of the golf world pay attention with a strong of tremendous golf during the 2025 PGA Tour season.

Here are five fast facts about Chris Gotterup:


1. He was born in Maryland, but he’s a Jersey boy

Chris Gotterup was born on July 20, 1999, in Easton, Maryland, but he was raised in New Jersey and is largely associated with the Garden State.

Gotterup was raised in Little Silver, N.J., and he attended Christian Brothers Academy. Unsurprisingly, he starred on the varsity golf team for the Colts. His performance as a young golfer earned him a spot on the team at Rutgers.


2. He’s a Rutgers golf legend

Rutgers isn’t exactly a golf powerhouse, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a better, more accomplished player for the Scarlet Knights than Gotterup. He earned just about every accomplishment one could secure in his time there, including the Big Ten Player of the Year for the 2019-20 season. He tied for fourth place at the 2019 Big Ten Conference Championship, the best finish in program history. In 29 career tournaments with Rutgers, he recorded seven top-five finishes and for more top-10s.

During that same time, he dominated the summer amateur circuit in Jersey, winning the NJSGA Open in 2019 while also winning the 2019 Met Amateur.


3. His career took off at Oklahoma

With one college season to play, Gotterup transferred Oklahoma to play for one of the best programs in the country. He was better than advertised for the Sooners, making his one season in Norman stand out as one of the best in program history.

Gotterup’s 2022 season was the stuff of legend. He was the unanimous No. 1 player in the country, based on both the Golfstat and Sagarin rankings. He finished runner-up at the Big 12 championship and missed a playoff at the NCAA championship by just one stroke, settling for a top-five finish. That earned him both the Haskins Award and Jack Nicklaus Award as the best player in college golf.


4. His PGA Tour breakout came in 2025

Gotterup turned pro after his 2022 season at OU, but he didn’t experience immediate success as a pro. He didn’t break through and win until the 2024 campaign where he notched his first career win at the Myrtle Beach Classic.

While a win’s a win — Gotterup took home $720,000 for victory No. 1 — it came against one of the worst fields on the schedule. Gotterup made sure his second win came against one of the best non-major fields in golf. He won the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club. Gotterup tied a course record with a 61 in the second round before holding off Rory McIlroy in the final round.


5. He girlfriend is Samantha Rae Monte

Based on Instagram posts, its appears the two have been dating since at least 2023. According to Monte’s profile, she’s based out of New York City, while Gotterup calls Edmond, Oklahoma, his home.

Monte spends plenty of time on the road with Gotterup, making trips to Arizona for the Waste Management Phoenix Open and also going to Oakmont Country Club for the U.S. Open.

However, Gotterup revealed during the 2025 British Open that she hadn’t traveled with him to Royal Portrush where he put together another sensational effort the week after his second career win.
