Why One Insider Thinks Breece Hall Is No Longer Irreplaceable

The New York Jets have had few bright spots in a season that has produced just three wins heading into the final week of the regular season. One of those bright spots has been running back Breece Hall, who surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark (1,065 yards) during the Jets’ Week 17 loss to the New England Patriots.

Hall became the first Jet to reach that milestone since 2015, when running back Chris Ivory recorded 1,070 rushing yards.

Even after a strong 2025 campaign, SNY’s Connor Hughes does not believe bringing back Hall, who is set to hit free agency this offseason, would be the best move for New York.

“I don’t look at Breece and see him anymore as this irreplaceable player,” said Hughes on SNY’s Jets Final Drive.  “If the Jets let Breece walk, they’re going to need to find another running back…but I almost feel like going and getting somebody at that $5-7 million range in free agency or drafting somebody in the fourth round, and then pairing that player with Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis, I almost feel like that’s the way this should go.”

Hughes also believes Hall has less explosiveness than he used to.

“Even on the long touchdown he broke against the Patriots, he doesn’t have the separation he used to,” Hughes said. “Yeah, he scored, but it’s not the same burst, it’s not the same stride, it’s not the same speed.”

The Case for Keeping Breece Hall in New York

Despite Hughes’ opinion, there is a very realistic scenario in which the Jets bring back their star running back, who has by far been the most productive player on the Jets’ offense this season.

According to Fox Sports, Hall leads the entire Jets roster in all-purpose yards with 1,415 this season. He also ranks first in rushing yards by a wide margin, totaling 1,065, while the second-most productive player in the run game, quarterback Justin Fields, has 383 yards. Hall is third on the team in receiving yards with 350, trailing only star wide receiver Garrett Wilson (395) and rookie tight end Mason Taylor (369).

Looking at those numbers, if the Jets move on from Hall, a proven threat in both the run and pass game, they would have to fill the void left by their most productive offensive player this season, who has also proven to be a reliable back year after year.

According to Zak Koeppel of NFL.com, the Jets are projected to have $111.6 million in cap space, a very high figure that would allow the team to re-sign Hall if both sides want to continue the partnership.

Breece Hall Speaks Out After Patriots Loss

After the 42-10 loss on Sunday, Hall was asked about reaching the 1,000-yard rushing milestone.

“It’s cool, sucks that it had to happen in a loss. Felt like I should have even gotten to that mark a few weeks ago, but there’s just been a lot going on,” Hall said (SNYJets on X).

With the Jets entering another rebuild, it is questionable whether both parties will want to reunite. But if Hall doesn’t end up back in a Jets uniform, there is no doubt the team will face a major loss to fill.
