WNBA World Reacts to Angel Reese Trade as Atlanta Dream Make Bold Championship Push

The Atlanta Dream made one of the most aggressive moves of the WNBA offseason on Monday, acquiring Angel Reese from the Chicago Sky in a deal that immediately sparked strong reactions across the basketball world.

Atlanta sent two future first-round picks (2027 and 2028) along with 2028 second-round swap rights to Chicago in exchange for Reese, a two-time All-Star and the league’s reigning rebounding leader, according to ESPN’s Kendra Andrews.

The trade was first reported by Taylor Rooks of NBA on Prime.

Within minutes of the announcement, social media lit up with a mix of excitement, disbelief and championship-level expectations tied to the Dream’s move.

“Dream team just got better!” one fan wrote, while another added, “Atlanta is going to be scary.”

Dream Add “Rebounding Queen” to Contender Core

The move signals a clear win-now approach for Atlanta, which finished 30-14 last season — the third-best record in the league — before falling in the first round of the playoffs.

Reese, 23, brings elite production on both ends of the floor. She averaged 14.7 points, 12.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists last season while leading the WNBA with 23 double-doubles.

She is also the only player in league history to average at least 12 rebounds per game in multiple seasons.

“Atlanta just got themselves a REBOUNDING QUEEN,” one post read. “She’s about to own the paint and turn this team into a problem.”

Reese now joins a core that includes All-Star guard Allisha Gray and former No. 1 overall pick Rhyne Howard, giving Atlanta a balanced trio capable of contending immediately.

“Angel is a dynamic talent and a perfect fit for what we are building,” Dream general manager Dan Padover said in a statement, via ESPN.

Championship Expectations Rise in Atlanta

The addition of Reese has quickly shifted expectations around the franchise.

“Atlanta Dream WNBA championship before the Hawks win a finals is crazy work,” one fan posted, referencing the city’s NBA team, the Atlanta Hawks.

Others pointed to matchup implications, particularly against rising stars like Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever.

“Atlanta wants that sweet money when they play Caitlin Clark and the Fever now,” another comment read.

The pairing possibilities have also generated buzz, including Reese’s potential fit alongside veteran frontcourt players.

“Reese lobs to Griner gonna go crazy,” one user wrote, referencing Brittney Griner.

Questions Remain About the Cost

While many praised the move, others questioned whether Atlanta paid too high a price for Reese.

“Dream got fleeced,” one fan wrote. “This is worse than the Luka trade.”

Another added: “Two first rounders for a player on a 10-34 team is crazy, but Atlanta at 30-14 knows what they’re doing.”

The Dream clearly believe Reese is more than a stat producer — viewing her as a foundational piece capable of elevating a playoff team into a championship contender.

Reese expressed enthusiasm about the move.

“I’m beyond grateful for the opportunity to join the Atlanta Dream organization,” she said, via ESPN. “I’m focused on continuing to grow my game and competing at the highest level.”

High-Risk, High-Reward Move

Atlanta’s decision reflects a broader trend across the WNBA: teams prioritizing proven stars over long-term draft assets.

If Reese delivers at her current level — or takes another step forward — the Dream could emerge as one of the league’s most complete teams.

If not, the cost of two future first-round picks could loom large.

For now, though, the reaction around the league is clear: Atlanta just made one of the boldest moves of the year.

And expectations have never been higher.
