Wolves have set the asking price for Manchester United to sign Brazil international midfielder Joao Gomes in January.

The Red Devils appear to have turned a corner under Ruben Amorim and are currently in the midst of a five-game unbeaten run.

Despite their improvement, there is still plenty of work to undertake before the INEOS-led rebuild is complete.

Summer recruits Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Senne Lammens have all shown promise in recent weeks but further signings will be required before United are able to mount a credible title challenge.

Amorim will hope the next stage ofUnited’s recruitment drive will focus on strengthening his midfield engine room.

According to Record, United are considering Wolves’ Joao Gomes as a potential alternative given the asking price is set at just £44m.

Amorim has been operating with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro as his go to combination in central midfield so far this season but doubts persist over their long-term futures.

Both have been linked with moves away over the course of the last 12 months but the United boss is keen to retain their services.

Kobbie Mainoo’s future, however, is likely to lie elsewhere with Napoli likely to test the waters again in January with a view to a potential loan move.

The England international has made just eight appearances so far this season and is keen for more game time, particularly in a World Cup year.

Manuel Ugarte, meanwhile, has struggled to adjust to the demands of the Premier League following his move from PSG nearly 12 months ago.

The Uruguay international was given a dressing down by Amorim following last season’s Europa League final and told he was unrecognisble from the player who his manager coached at Sporting Lisbon earlier in his career.
