WTA Wimbledon Day 4 Recap & Highlights: Top Seeds & Former Champs Advance

Catch up on all of the latest WTA Wimbledon action with Heavy’s day four recap & highlights.

Thursday’s play at SW19 has officially concluded, and while Gaël Monfils and Márton Fucsovics’ match was suspended on the ATP side, all 16 WTA matches have wrapped up.

The first two days of play were largely defined by staggering upsets that saw a number of top seeds eliminated; however, on Thursday, that wasn’t the case.

In the top ten, Mirra Andreeva, Iga Świątek, and Emma Navarro all picked up big wins to advance to the third round.

Świątek, who is in pursuit of her first Wimbledon title, took a 4-1 lead in the first set against Caty McNally; however, the World No. 397 managed to turn things around, stealing the set 7-5.  Despite that, Świątek put forth a dominant display through the second and third sets, winning the match 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Over on Court 1, teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva picked up a big win over Lucia Bronzetti (6-1, 7-6), punching her ticket to the third round as she looks to make a deep run at this year’s tournament.

Rounding out the top-10, Emma Navarro,, picked up a lopsided win over Veronika Kudermetova on Court 3 (6-1, 6-2) punching her ticket to a third-round meeting with reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejčiková on Saturday.

Former Champions Shine On Day 4

In addition to top-seeded players shining on Thursday, two notable former Wimbledon champions also picked up big wins.

On Court 1, Elena Rybakina, who entered this year’s tournament as the No. 11 seed, picked up a convincing win over Maria Sakkari (6-3, 6-1).

Following a stunning first round that saw a number of top-seeded players upset, the one and only Martina Navratilova went so far as to say during Thursday’s BBC broadcast of the Rybakina-Sakkari match that the 2022 Wimbledon champ may be the favorite despite being seeded 11th.

Additionally, over on Court 2, reigning Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejčiková picked up a hard-fought win over Carolina Dolehide (6-4, 3-6, 6-2).

If Krejčiková is able to emerge victorious from this year’s tournament, she will become just the sixth woman in history to go back-to-back at SW19, putting her alongside greats like Navratilova, the Williams sisters, Steffi Graf, and Billie Jean King.
