Yankees’ Aaron Boone Sends Confident Message on Will Warren After Loss

The New York Yankees‘ quest to hand the Boston Red Sox a demoralizing three-game sweep on Sunday night was extinguished almost immediately thanks to a rough first inning from starting pitcher Will Warren. And yet, even in the wake of this outing, manager Aaron Boone isn’t worried about Warren moving forward.

The Sox jumped Warren for six runs in the first inning on Sunday night, and that ended up being all the run support they needed, with the final score settling in at 6-4. While the Yanks made a push throughout the game to get back into the contest, Warren’s abysmal start ended up putting the team in a hole they could not find their way out of.

Aaron Boone Dishes on Will Warren After Rough Start

In his first full season with the Yankees, Warren has emerged as a key piece of the team’s starting rotation. His 31 starts are tied for the most in the league, and while he hasn’t always been great, he’s been able to eat innings for New York, which is pretty much all you can ask for from a guy coming in at the backend of the rotation.

Warren was hit hard by Boston immediately in his latest start, but he still managed to lock in and toss five innings for New York. When all was said and done, Warren gave up six runs on 10 hits and one walk, while also striking out two batters. Considering how poorly the first inning went, it was great to see Warren get back on track and find a way to make it through five innings.

After the game, that’s what Boone chose to focus on when looking at Warren’s outing. Sure, the first inning was a mess, but he did his best to ensure that the situation didn’t get worse, while also allowing his team a chance to stay in the game. With that in mind, it doesn’t sound like Boone is all that concerned with this poor outing from Warren.

“Obviously, a tough first inning … but (he) buckled down and gives us five innings, let’s us hang around and keep creeping back into it,” Boone said after the game. “Really good effort to not let it completely get away, and then you’re talking about wrecking the pen and everything like that.”

Yankees Turn Their Attention to Upcoming Series vs. Twins

After winning the first two games of the series, New York had already accomplished their goal against Boston by heading into Fenway Park and picking up a series victory. Sure, a sweep would have been nice, but they now have a 1.5-game lead over their hated rival for the top American League wild card with just 13 games left in the regular season.

The job isn’t finished just yet, though, as the Yankees are going to have to continue winning if they intend to hold onto this spot. They will kick off a new three-game series against the Minnesota Twins on Monday night, with Carlos Rodon set to take the mound against Simeon Woods Richardson. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m. ET.
