Yankees’ Devin Williams Not Expected Back in New York Next Season

Playing for the New York Yankees isn’t an easy task, and that’s been evident over the past few decades with many players. The latest example of that is Devin Williams, who many thought would be one of the better closers in Major League Baseball once again for the Yankees when they acquired him in a deal involving Nestor Cortes during the offseason.

For Williams, this is a problem for many reasons. Not only does he want to help the Yankees win a World Series, but he’s set to hit the free agency market at the end of the season, and could’ve been looking at one of the biggest contracts in Major League Baseball history for a closer, if not the biggest.

Despite that, whether it happens or not — which seems very unlikely — Tim Britton of The Athletic expects that not to be with the Yankees. He noted that at this point, it’s fair to “eliminate” the Yankees from the list of teams that Williams will have interest from.

“Well, we can probably eliminate the Yankees from the teams potentially interested in Williams this winter. It’s been a brutal campaign for the closer in the Bronx, as he’s surrendered more earned runs this season than in his final three with the Brewers.

“A low-leverage scoreless inning Sunday finally halted a string of five straight games allowing a run. The closer market looks pretty robust this winter: In addition to Williams, Edwin Díaz and Robert Suárez will likely opt out, and Aroldis Chapman and Ryan Helsley will be available as well,” Britton wrote.

No Surprise the Yankees Will Move on from Devin Williams

This doesn’t come as much of a surprise after some of the New York Yankees’ decisions with Williams over the past few months. The team initially removed him from his closer role, but eventually gave it back to him.

It remains uncertain if the Yankees will do that again after they decided to take him out of the closer role earlier this week, but Aaron Boone recently spoke about the exact plan.

“We’ll get him into some lower leverage spots, but you don’t always have that say going into a night, depending on who’s available, who’s not, how deep into a game your starter gets, how you have to get to the finish line and those kinds of things,” Boone said, per Newsweek, on “Talkin’ Yanks.” “You’ve got to be ready for all situations. It’s all hands on deck right now.”

Devin Williams’ Disastrous Season in New York

Throughout the season, Williams has posted a 5.60 ERA and blown more games than ever before.

It’s been an issue for the New York Yankees as they want to win the American League East. If he hadn’t blown the games that he had, the Yankees would likely be in a much better position and possibly be in first place in the American League East if they got what they expected from the right-hander.

William still has above-average strikeout stuff with 59 strikeouts in 45.0 innings, but he hasn’t been the same caliber of arm he’s been over much of his career.

When speaking about the situation, Williams even admitted that he isn’t throwing the baseball at a high level right now, according to ESPN.

“I’m not making pitches,” Williams told reporters. “It’s pretty simple. I stink right now.”

“I really haven’t struggled like this since probably 2018 [after Tommy John surgery],” Williams said. “All I did then was continue to work and just try to help the team in any way I can.”
