Yankees Get Major Update on Shortstop Anthony Volpe After Rough Season

The Yankees have taken additional steps to address shortstop Anthony Volpe’s troublesome shoulder.

According to Joel Sherman and Greg Joyce of the New York Post, Volpe underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a torn labrum in his left non-throwing shoulder.

The Post added that Volpe, 24, could be ready for the start of next season if he has a typical recovery.

Volpe played through a torn labrum for most of the 2025 campaign, never landing on the injured list despite struggling extensively both at the plate and in the field.

Volpe’s Defense Dramatically Declined in 2025

Volpe initially was injured when he felt a pop in his shoulder after diving for a ball on May 3 against the Rays. He was not in the lineup the following day but resumed his everyday role until mid-September.

The former top prospect had his worst season in the majors this year, slashing .212/.272/.391 in 153 games. Even more worrisome, Volpe’s defense declined dramatically after winning a Gold Glove as a rookie and being named a finalist in 2024. His 19 errors tied Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story for the American League lead.

Volpe went just 5-for-26 with 16 strikeouts in seven postseason games.

Yankees Maintain Belief in Volpe

Volpe received a cortisone injection for his shoulder at the All-Star break and again in September after reaggravating the injury. Midseason trade acquisition Jose Caballero started nine games in Volpe’s absence between Sept. 5-21.

Volpe finished with 19 home runs and a career-best 72 RBI to go with 18 stolen bases, but his .663 OPS ranked well below the Major League average.

Even so, the Yankees continually stood behind their shortstop, never wavering publicly in their commitment.

“This year notwithstanding, he’s got a lot of abilities that are positive,” general manager Brian Cashman said last month, via The Athletic. “He’s had a tough stretch, but I think he’s someone we can count on and we believe in. But acknowledging at the same time, this isn’t the season we expected or he expected.”

Added Cashman: “That doesn’t change our viewpoint of what he’s capable of. I think he’s a really talented guy and I think he has a chance to be a positive impact on us.”
