The New York Yankees need a busy trade deadline if they’re trying to win a World Series in October. Currently sitting at 46-34, the Yankees are 4-6 over their last 10 games, as things haven’t been pretty.Â
The Yankees will have an excellent opportunity to figure things out in the coming days, taking on the Athletics, but those aren’t guaranteed wins. This is still Major League Baseball, and many teams around the league will bring their best against New York.Â
As the Yankees search for ways to improve at the trade deadline, many have suggested that they either go after a third baseman or a second baseman. However, Chris Kirschner of The Athletic issued some caution, urging Yankees fans not to get too high on the potential additions they can make at this deadline, adding that it might be a “dud.”Â
âBrace yourself for the possibility that this trade deadline might be a dud. There are too many teams still in the mix. Maybe that changes in a month, but in the expanded playoffs era, weâve seen organizations would rather hold or buy than sell. Sneak into the playoffs, and who knows what happens.
âI would imagine that one of their focuses at the trade deadline will be trying to upgrade Perazaâs spot on the roster. Thatâs why youâll likely hear Isiah Kiner-Falefaâs name pop up in trade rumors. Peraza is not a viable major leaguer. The Yankees need better reinforcements. Perazaâs spot on the roster is much more important than many may think,â he wrote.Â
Are Yankees In Challenging Situation for Buyer?
The last thing the New York Yankees can do at this trade deadline is have a dud. However, as Kirschner mentioned, multiple teams around the league are looking to buy.Â
Not only does that make prices higher, but the Yankees’ farm system isn’t exactly in a great spot. If other teams around the league want players, they can be outbid relatively easily by many.Â
Regarding who they could potentially add to fill that hole as a backup infielder, Kirschner mentioned Isiah Kiner-Falefa, who Yankees fans likely won’t want to hear after his first stint with the team.Â
âHeâs the backup shortstop right now. You kind of need one because of the positionâs importance on the field. Iâve seen too many fans in their make-believe trade scenarios try to upgrade the bench without having anyone there who can play shortstop. If youâre getting rid of Peraza, you need to bring in someone who has shortstop experience,â Kirschner wrote.
What’s Yankees’ Biggest Need at MLB Trade Deadline?
The New York Yankees don’t just need to add to the lineup. While the Yankees’ lineup has been one of the best in Major League Baseball for much of the year, it has struggled recently.Â
However, the starting rotation will also need improvements, which SB Nation believes might be the most significant area of improvement.Â
âItâs much easier to see how the Yankees could add on the other side of the ball. Itâs not so much due to the unit struggling (the Yankees have a top-five staff in the AL by ERA). But, as the old adage goes, you can never have too much pitching. Max Fried and Carlos Rodón have performed at an All-Star level, and Clarke Schmidt has settled in after shaking off some rust to pitch some of his best baseball in pinstripes,â they wrote.
