Yankees Linked to Mets Coach to Replace Aaron Boone Amid Calls Mounting

With World Series expectations every season, the New York Yankees haven’t lived up to the hype in the 2025 campaign. In third place in the American League East, the Yankees are 6.5 games back with about a month to play. Some believe that significant changes are necessary, and if that’s the case, Aaron Boone could be without a job.

If the Yankees decide to move on from Boone, only time will reveal whether it’s the right choice, though many fans are already calling for it.

When looking at who the Yankees could replace him with, Jake Elman of FanSided had an interesting name, adding that Eric Chavez, the New York Mets hitting coach, could be an option.

“Even the most loyal Yankees fans might forget that Chavez spent two seasons in the Bronx, batting .274 with 18 homers, 63 RBIs, and a .783 OPS from 2011-12. He also infamously went hitless in 16 at-bats during the 2012 playoffs. More recently, Chavez joined the Yankees as an assistant hitting coach in December 2021 before the Mets hired him away two weeks later.

“Chavez has been both a hitting coach and bench coach with the Mets, and he’s previously publicly expressed a desire to manage. With that said, we need to ask if the Yankees would again consider someone with zero managerial experience. In fairness to Boone, his managerial issues had far more to do with personality and loyalty to players than him having never coached before,” he wrote.

Is It Time for the Yankees to Move On From Aaron Boone?

It isn’t just fans who believe the New York Yankees could move on from Boone.

CBS Sports’ Dayn Perry believes that Boone is on the hot seat, even if the Yankees don’t decide to move on from him before the season ends. At this point, barring something drastic happening, the Yankees will likely allow Boone to the end of the season, at the very least. After that, there are questions about his future, to say the least.

“Suffice it to say, this would be a headline-grabber, which means it’s probably not going to happen,” wrote Perry. “Even so, it’s worth pondering given that the Yankees recently lost their division lead to the Blue Jays in the American League East and are presently tied with the Rays for second place (and thus in grave peril of slipping into third place). Boone’s Yanks are still in playoff position, yes, but they’re on unsure footing thanks largely to their 14-19 mark since June 1…

“For a while, they were checking those boxes, but lately that hasn’t been the case. The injury-battered rotation doesn’t help matters, and if the Yankees continue their recent struggles then Boone’s job security might be compromised. Again, he’s probably safe, at least until the offseason, but the Yankees’ recent struggles make this worth monitoring,” he wrote.

Will Firing Aaron Boone Make New York Better?

One can only question whether firing Boone would be the right decision for the New York Yankees.

On paper, this team is as good as any in the league, but the Yankees have also dealt with multiple injuries. With Giancarlo Stanton sidelined for much of the year, Gerrit Cole out for the entire season, Luis Gil missing significant time, and several other players struggling or underperforming—including Devin Williams—it’s hard to blame the manager.
