Yankees Predicted to Cut Ties With 21 Home Run Slugger in Surprising Move

The New York Yankees landed Trent Grisham as a throw-in in the Juan Soto trade. While Grisham has struggled as a player throughout his career, he’s been one of the better players on the Yankees roster throughout the season, hitting .244 with 21 home runs, 46 RBIs, and an .804 OPS. His .804 OPS ranks in the top-55 in Major League Baseball, which certainly isn’t bad for a throw-in of a trade.

Some believe that with his elite defense in center field, Grisham could get paid handsomely in free agency. Unfortunately, with all the young talent the Yankees have, with Spencer Jones expected to be up eventually, that might not be in New York.

Randy Miller of NJ.com was the latest to predict that would be the case, predicting Grisham to leave in free agency.

“Age: 28 (29 on Nov. 1, 2025). Contract: Making $5 million on one-year pact signed with Yankees on 11/22/24. Free agent after season. 2025 hitting stats: Yankees, .244 average, 348 AB, 55 runs, 85 hits, 21 HR, 46 RBI, 1 SB, .804 OPS, 103 games. 2025 fielding stats: 1 error, 100 games (87 starts) in center field. Prediction: Signs with another club,” he wrote.

Will the Yankees Keep Trent Grisham?

It remains uncertain what the New York Yankees want to do with Grisham, but having a player of his caliber roaming center field for a long time would be a good idea. Ultimately, however, the Yankees understand there’s a price to pay.

Grisham and his agent also have to understand that, but when speaking to Miller about his free agency situation, he doesn’t seem to worry about it. He wants to focus on winning with the Yankees and let the rest take care of itself.

”I would start by saying free agency is not on the forefront of my mind because what’s most important right here is winning now,” Grisham said, according to Miller. “I think Yankee fans can appreciate that. We still have a month and a half left. We have a really good chance to win it all. So that should be the clear-cut focus. But you’re human. That stuff crosses your mind. I do my best to not let it go there for long and just kind of be where my feet are.”

Trent Grisham Makes Case to Stay in New York

While the New York Yankees haven’t played their best baseball throughout the 2025 campaign, at the end of the day, they’re still the Yankees. There’s plenty to be said about wearing pinstripes and playing in Yankee Stadium. Furthermore, New York will have to hope that players feel the same way.

Grisham later added that he loves the team, clubhouse, and Aaron Judge. He could be willing to stay in New York if all of those factors were considered. However, the Yankees will have much of the final say on that.

“I do love this team,” he said, per Miller. “I love what we’ve got going on right now. I will say that. And this clubhouse is really amazing, led by (Aaron) Judge. I don’t know what the future holds. I can’t predict the future. You don’t know, I don’t know, they don’t know.”
