Yankees Predicted to Make $70 Million Addition to Replace DJ LeMahieu

When there’s smoke, there’s typically fire around Major League Baseball. For the New York Yankees, they’ve been linked to Ryan McMahon by multiple insiders, showing that the Yankees likely have some level of interest in the left-handed hitter from the Colorado Rockies. While it isn’t a guarantee that the Yankees will trade for him, it’s something to monitor.

Some have taken those rumors and made some predictions, including Sports Illustrated, which recently predicted that McMahon would be traded to the Yankees. They added that there are a couple of other fits, including the Seattle Mariners, but that McMahon would eventually be traded to the Yankees.

“McMahon is on pace to hit 20 homers for the sixth straight full season, an impressive accomplishment that’s somewhat lessened by playing half of his games at Coors Field—despite that fact, he’s never registered as an above-average bat by wRC+. His OPS this season is also more than 300 points higher in Colorado compared to road games.

“The 30-year-old is also set to make $16 million in each of the next two seasons, meaning the Rockies would likely have to pay part of his contract if they want to acquire a meaningful prospect package in a trade. Still, McMahon’s season statistics are about as consistent as they can get, and he could fill multiple spots around the infield for some playoff team,” they wrote.

How Does McMahon Fit With the Yankees?

McMahon is a really tough player to evaluate. While the New York Yankees would likely be a better team with him on the roster, it isn’t like he’s the perfect fit.

Frankly, the best thing about him is that he’d allow Jazz Chisholm Jr. to move back to second base full time and keep DJ LeMahieu out of the lineup. While LeMahieu hasn’t been horrible this year, McMahon would still be much better for the Yankees.

He’s currently hitting .222 with a 95 OPS+, which isn’t great, but he’s on pace to hit 20 home runs again, currently with 12.

According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Colorado Rockies were hopeful that McMahon would be part of their core when they figured things out.

However, the Rockies are the worst team in Major League Baseball this season, and perhaps one of the worst in Major League Baseball history.

They’re currently 18-65, which is by far the worst record in Major League Baseball. They have nine fewer wins than any team in the league, with the Chicago White Sox having the second fewest at 27.

Will the Yankees Put Together a Good Enough Trade Package?

For the New York Yankees, they know they’ll likely have an opportunity to trade for McMahon, but other teams will also be interested; they must ensure that their package is strong enough to land the third baseman.

“The Rockies had hoped for McMahon to be part of their core when they turned things around, but Colorado appears to be far away from that point, making McMahon a potential trade chip.

“The 30-year-old has turned things around following a sluggish start, hitting seven homers with 16 RBIs and an .855 OPS in 37 games since May 7, while ranking in the top 10 percent of the league this season in average exit velocity, hard-hit percentage and walk percentage. A stellar defensive third baseman, McMahon is signed for $12 million in 2025 and $16 million in each of the next two seasons,” Feinsand wrote.
