Yankees Receive Concerning Dodgers Take on Cody Bellinger

The Los Angeles Dodgers are coming off back-to-back World Series titles and are looking for a three-peat. As a result, the front office wants to shore up any weaknesses that could hinder the prospect of winning three straight titles.

Los Angeles have already found their new closer in Edwin Diaz, who left the New York Mets with a chance at winning with the Dodgers. Moreover, can another player leave the Big Apple and reunite with Los Angeles to win another World Series?

Cody Bellinger remains a free agent, and the outfielder is linked to the Mets and New York Yankees. While the Mets appear to be in the picture, MLB play-by-play announcer Jenny Cavnar believes the Dodgers are the Yankees’ biggest threat for Bellinger.

“If a contract is out to Cody Bellinger right now, it’s in his court,” Cavnar said in a video posted by MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM on January 2. “It’s in his court and his agency’s court. They’re countering, they’re listening to other offers.

“Who do you think the biggest competition is? That’s my question at this point in time. I don’t think it’s a team from the American League. I think their biggest competition is going to be the reigning World Series champs. You want to talk about a reunion.”

Could the Dodgers’ Recent WS Success Tempt Cody Bellinger

At 30 years old, this is likely the last big-time contract that Bellinger will receive, so it’s no surprise that he’s taking his time.

The former Dodgers star took advantage of playing at Yankee Stadium, posting a .272 batting average with 160 hits, 29 homers, 98 RBIs, and 89 runs scored in 152 games in 2025, per StatMuse. Moreover, Cavnar believes the Dodgers’ recent success could tempt Bellinger to circle back to his former team.

“He could either reunite in New York and go right back and run it back, or he could go, ‘I’ve been watching from the other coast; I remember when we won a World Series when I was a Dodger in 2020,’” Cavnar added.

“We didn’t have those big celebrations like they’ve had the last two years. Man, the sunshine, playing I Love LA after the games. I don’t know. I think the West Coast could maybe lure him back. That could be a very interesting fit if the Dodgers did indeed decide to pursue him.”

Returning to the Yankees Makes Sense for Cody Bellinger

While a return to Los Angeles makes sense, considering their outfield issues, SNY’s Dani Wexelman says the outfielder needs to remain with the Yankees.

“Cody Bellinger is the obvious choice because he was just there, and he performed really well in Yankee Stadium,” Wexelman said in a December 31 video posted by MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM.

“He is a really nice fit with the team. He’s an even better fit behind Aaron Judge to protect him. And he gives Aaron Boone so many options, right? A guy who is above average on the infield and in the outfield is an incredible resource, and a guy who can be versatile in that way.”
