The New York Yankees have to get going this offseason. Brian Cashman and the rest of the front office have made no meaningful moves, and the top free agents are starting to get knocked off the board one by one. After getting bad news regarding free agent target Michael King, who decided to return to the Padres, the concern is growing in the Bronx.
However, there is still time, and if the Yankees are unwilling to sign top free agents, they could turn to the trade market and make a big splash there. In a recent post by Bleacher Report, the Yankees are predicted to make a splash trade for Miami Marlins‘ starter Edward Cabrera, who is thought to potentially be on the move this offseason.

Yankees-Marlins Trade Idea Offloads Jasson Dominguez for Edward Cabrera
The recent article by Bleacher Report’s Joel Reuter outlines what the Yankees can do to ‘salvage’ this offseason.
In the second step, Reuter predicts that the Yankees will trade for Marlins starter Edward Cabrera:
“Proposed Transaction: Yankees acquire SP Edward Cabrera from the Marlins for OF Jasson DomÃnguez.”
“If the Yankees land Kyle Tucker or bring back Cody Bellinger, the outfield would be set, as they would join Trent Grisham and Aaron Judge in the starting lineup, leaving former top prospect Jasson DomÃnguez as a potential trade chip.”

Step one of Reuter’s proposed plan is signing top free agent Kyle Tucker, so it makes sense that what immediately follows that step is offloading Jasson Dominguez. Dominguez is still just 22, but he hit just 10 home runs in 123 games this past season. He has a career OPS of .724 in 468 at-bats.

What is Edward Cabrera’s Fit?
Edward Cabrera would be a great fit in the Yankees’ rotation. In 2025, he posted a 3.53 ERA over 137.2 innings, 26 starts, and recorded 150 strikeouts.
New York is already dealing with injuries to their starting rotation, as both Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodon are expected to start the season sidelined. Clarke Schmidt is also still rehabbing from Tommy John Surgery.
As for Cabrera, he has a career 4.07 ERA over 431.2 innings. He saw a career-high in innings, strikeouts, and starts.
The focal point of this trade idea is whether the Yankees would actually trade away Dominguez. Aaron Boone has already been on record saying that Jasson will get more playing time in left field, but that is certainly subject to change based on whether New York makes any big moves in the coming months.
In other moves that BR writer Joel Reuter suggests the Yankees make, it include signing two depth relievers and first baseman Rhys Hoskins.
