Youngster Pays Price as Rams Add Recent Draft Pick in Roster Adjustment

The Los Angeles Rams had one more piece of business to tend to roster-wise before closing out Week 13, and it involved a player head coach Sean McVay and Co. know well.

The Rams reunited with kicker Joshua Karty. LA replaced Karty with Harrison Mevis, but McVay offered telling comments about the team’s plans for the former. That appears to be coming to fruition, as Karty ends up staying with the only NFL team he has ever known.

The move cost another young prospect their spot on the Rams’ practice squad, though.

The Rams’ PR team announced in a post on X on December 1 that they used a “practice squad exception” to re-add Karty, albeit in a different capacity.

Karty was a sixth-round selection of the Rams, taken 209th overall in the 2024 draft. He opened this season as the kicker but saw his job security waiver amid a 10-for-15 showing on field goals and 23-for-26 on extra points.

Karty was 29-for-24 on FGs and 32-for-36 for the Rams as a rookie.

“I still do have a lot of confidence in Josh Karty. He’s not going anywhere,” McVay told reporters in November after making the switch. “I was really pleased, and really impressed, and proud of how Josh handled himself this week. I think he’s got a really bright future; I think he’s done a lot of really good things for us.”

The Rams waived Karty on November 28, bringing the 23-year-old back into their fold less than one week later.

The Rams signed Mevis to their 53-man roster ahead of Week 12 against the Carolina Panthers before exhausting his practice squad elevations. McVay declined to “pigeonhole” himself into anything before making the switch from Karty to Mevis, an undrafted free agent in 2024.

Perhaps the same holds for Karty now that he is in Mevis’ former position on the practice squad.

Karty was not alone, with the Rams also switching from long snapper Alex Ward, who remains a free agent, in favor of two-time Pro Bowl journeyman Jake McQuaide.

McQuaide and Mevis have proven the Rams right so far. However, as McVay noted, they are not ready to move on from Karty entirely. The youngster had been a weapon with his unique kickoff style, but that did not trump his inefficiency.

Rams Terminate Practice Squad OL Wyatt Bowles’ Contract

The Rams also announced that the “Terminated (by Club) from Practice Squad OL Wyatt Bowles.”

Bowles signed with the Rams ahead of their Week 12 showdown against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers amid injuries along their front five. They remain without right tackle Rob Havenstein, who is on injured reserve with multiple issues.

But McVay said he expects everyone on the active roster to be available in Week 13.

That includes veteran swing tackle Scott Quessenberry, who provides depth behind Havenstein’s fill-in, Warren McClendon.

Bowles turned heads in his time on the field with the Rams during the 2025 preseason, and there remains a chance he finds his way back onto the roster or practice squad before the end of the regular season, given the nature of injuries in the NFL.
