1 dead, 1 injured in Hawthorne shooting

A man was killed and a second man was hospitalized following a shooting in Hawthorne early Wednesday morning, Oct. 15, and a person believed to be the suspect was detained for questioning, authorities said.

Hawthorne police were called to the 14100 block of Doty Avenue, north of West Rosecrans Avenue, just before 2:15 a.m. on a report of gunshots heard and found one victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound and another person holding a firearm, said the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which was leading the investigation.

Investigators learned that another man drove to a hospital and called Hawthorne police to report that he had also been shot, LASD officials said. The wound was characterized as non-life threatening.

The victim was not identified by authorities pending notification of his relatives and no additional information was provided about the person who was detained.

The shooting was the second in Hawthorne in four days.

On Sunday, 35-year-old Anthony Jackson Jr. was hanging out with friends on the patio at The Greatest bar at Inglewood Avenue and 138th Street watching Sunday Night Football when a man, believed to have been thrown out of the bar after a fight, drove by and fired shots, Lt. Daniel Vizcarra said.

Jackson was not involved in the fight, Vizcarra said. A person of interest was detained for questioning, but it was not known if that person was arrested.
