15-year-old Oakland girl killed in East Oakland car crash

A 16-year-old Oakland male was arrested on charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit and run after back-to-back collisions ended in the death of a 15-year-old female passenger and sent three other girls to the hospital Friday morning, according to police.

Around 9:40 a.m. Friday, a Toyota Corolla containing the five juveniles was involved in a collision with another vehicle near the intersection of 14th Avenue and East 31st Street in Oakland, according to authorities.

The 16-year-old male driver of the Toyota fled the scene and merged eastbound onto Interstate 580.

The driver who was struck by the Corolla followed in pursuit and called the police to share details of the crash.

The suspect then exited the freeway on 35th Avenue and traveled southbound at a high rate of speed. At an intersection in the 3300 block of 35th Ave., the Corolla was struck by a third vehicle, causing it to careen into a concrete wall, authorities said.

All occupants of the Corolla were taken to hospitals. The 15-year-old girl, located in a rear passenger seat, died less than an hour later. The conditions of the other girls in the crash were not available Sunday morning.

The suspect was taken to a hospital in critical but stable condition. Police placed him under arrest.
